Ok so my friend gave me her computer to try and fix, at first it was something that kept popping up next to the clock that looked like a shield saying that there was a virus. It was evidently some form of malware trying to prompt me to install an antivirus. She has Norton 360 and it wasn't picking anything up. And the internet was disabled, everytime I opened an IE it would simply try to re-direct me to the stupid malware site and it would clash with what the computer was trying to open, so it would make IE not respond.

I found a posting of someone that had a similar problem, they suggested to boot in safemod and run Smitfraudfix.exe so I did that and it got rid of the problem - well at least the message and icon that kept prompting next to the clock.

Everything was being laggy and not responding, so in an effort to fix it, I then proceeded to run CClean and cleaned the registry...but I did save it before I cleaned it, so I can restore it back if that's the problem.

I then used OTscanit2.exe and I thought it had addressed the issue, but that wasn't the case, IE kept freezing and small tasks keep freezing it, to the point where I can't open most programs that aren't preliminary windows components. (i.e. Internet explorer, Mozilla Firefox, msn, Norton360, etc.)

So now that I'm all out of options I installed HJT and ran a scan, I'm posting the log in hopes that someone can help me pin point what the issue might be. Thank you all who take the time to address my problem.

I did as you indicated, I ran ATF and cleaned everything, then I ran Malware and I'll post the log here. However I'm still having a hard time with the internet browser. I thought perhaps it was a compatibility thing, so I unistalled firefox, and went as far as re-installing Internet explorer. But there most definitively is progress, everything else is running smoothly and significantly faster. Any suggestions?

The whole point of the re-installing Internet Explorer in my last post was to emphasize the fact that the internet is still not functiononing properly. I have Norton 360 installed on the laptop in question and I ran it and all is fine. However I can't run anything that's online based due to the fact that I can't access the net through the computer. The series of files and programs that have been installed and downloaded thus far were downloaded on my computer, copied onto a USB and then transfered over to the computer in question.

What would you suggest I do?

Sorry, I didn't realise you had lost your connection completely. Lets see if resetting TCP/IP fixes it.

Please copy the entire contents of the codebox below into Notepad:
  • Open Notepad
  • Copy the contents of the codebox below using CTRL C

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\WinSock2]
  • Now return to Notepad and use CTRL V to paste the script
  • Verify that you have pasted the complete script
  • Save the Notepad file to your Desktop as FixReg.reg using Save as Type: All files
  • Locate FixReg.reg on your desktop
  • Double click to run, and when prompted Allow the file to merge with your registry
  • OK your way out.
After that, Reboot your computer.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
After the reboot, we will reinstall TCP/IP
  • Go to Start the Settings and choose Network Connections
  • Right click on your normal connection icon, and choose Properties
  • Click the Install button
  • Choose Protocol then click Add
  • Click Have disk
  • In the drop down box, type in: C:\WINDOWS\INF and click OK
  • In the next dialog, click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) then click OK
  • Click Close to leave the properties box
After that, Reboot your computer and see if you can access the internet.
RatHat
Alright so I did what you told me, and it worked like a charm. The internet is up and running and all seems to be smooth. I ran the Kaspersky scan. I was unable to find out how to do both scans, but I did run a scan of the critical folders, and a scan of my computer. I did both scans and I will paste them here. Both of the locations where malware, spyware, and the supposed trojans were found, I deleted. I don't know if that's sufficient enough but if there is another thing I should do please let me know.
Good to see that you got back online :)
So lets clean up!
1. Please open Notepad
  • Click Start , then Run
  • Type notepad .exe in the Run Box.
2. Now copy/paste the entire content of the codebox below into the Notepad window:
File::
C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\msimg32.dll
C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\riched20.dll
Folder::
C:\Documents and Settings\Laura Skinner\Incomplete
Registry::
[HKLM\~\services\sharedaccess\parameters\firewallpolicy\standardprofile\AuthorizedApplications\List]
"c:\\Program Files\\LimeWire\\LimeWire.exe"=-
[-HKLM\~\startupfolder\C:^Documents and Settings^All Users^Start Menu^Programs^Startup^RAMASST.lnk]
Driver::
4DA79116FBA2BB10
3. Save the above as CFScript.txt
4. Then drag the CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe as depicted in the animation below. This will start ComboFix again.
Posted Image
5. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), please post the Combofix.txt report into your next reply.
Looking good now! How is the machine performing?
Lets run one more scan as a double check:
  • Go to http://support.f-sec.../home/ols.shtml
  • Scroll to the bottom of the page and click the Start scanning button. A window will pop up.
  • Allow the Active X control to be installed on your computer, then click the Accept button
  • Click Full System Scan and allow the components to download and the scan to complete.
  • If malware is found, check Submit samples to F-Secure then select Automatic cleaning
  • When cleaning has finished, click Show report (this will open an Internet Explorer window containing the report)
  • Highlight and Copy (CTRL + C) the complete report, and Paste (CTRL + V) in a new reply to this post
If Automatic cleaning with Submit samples hangs, click Cancel, then New Scan
  • When the cleaning option is presented, Uncheck Submit samples to F-Secure
  • Click Automatic cleaning
  • When cleaning has finitished, click Show report (this will open an Internet Explorer window containing the report)
  • Highlight and Copy (CTRL + C) the complete report, and Paste (CTRL + V) in a new reply to this post
Notes:
  • This scan will only work with Internet Explorer
  • You must have administrator rights to run this scan
  • This scan can take a while, so please be patient
Post me a fresh HijackThis log along with the results from F-Secure, and let me know if there are any more problems with the computer.
Regards,
RatHat
I'll post you the scaned logs sometime tomorrow evening. I got so pre-occupied with trying to fiddle with this computer I lost track of time. I have a paper I have to sumbit in a few hours so I shoudl probably focus my attention on that. Although thus far the computer is running great. She was on it earlier while i was finishing running some scans and she noted a significant difference. Thank you so much for your help and I'll be sure to post the updated HJT log later on tonight.
