im sorry if this is in the wrong place...although the laptop is a vista...

i was running a scan for virus's and spyware on my laptop and the entire thing froze mid scan. I had no choice but to shut it down by pressing the power button.

Now when i turn it on the screen remains completely black and nothing appears on screen. its definately on as the fan is running continously...which it didnt before. and the power and wireless lights are on.

i dont mind completely resetting my computer, but dont know how to if nothing is appearing on screen. does any one have any ideas??

How long have you let the black screen sit? Sometimes it may take as long as 5 minutes to get itself sorted..... and start up again.
If and when it does, you'll want to look at the 'event viewer' to see what may have caused the freeze up.
