I am new here and I am not sure if I am doing this correctly...

I have McAfee Security Center 9.0v / Virus Scan 13.0 v / Personal Firewall 10.0v installed on my computer and about 2 1/2 weeks ago while running McAfee updates I got a pop up stating that it detected Generic Artemis on my computer and it is not able to remove this.

Also before posting this I went to "You must read this before posting a Hijackthis Log and while following the preperation instructions specifically the System Restore Point I ran into the following message pop up once I double clicked on SysRestorePoint.exe

"To run this application, you first must insall one of the following versions of the .NET Framework: v2.0.50727
Contact your application publisher for instructions about obtaining the appropriate version of the .NET Framework"

I stopped in those instructions since I am not sure of what to do next...

By the way I have downloaded HijackThis as recommended in the McAfee forum and below you will find a copy of the log -

Thanks for the assitance!

Hello Ana Maria,

Welcome to Geekstogo.

Please read this post completely, it may make it easier if you copy and paste this post to a new text document or print it for reference later. This will especially help you when your computer is off line.

Please download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
  • Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum.

Thank you emeraldnzl! :)

I did as you indicated however I have a doubt after running RunThis.bat and while my PC was suppose to reboot it would not restart on its own and we had to force the restart after that the Fixtool did run again and below is the report saved on the SDFix folder - let me know if everything that needed to happen in fact did or if I should run SDFix RunThis.bat again...

Once again thank you - the Generic Artemis was located in C:\System Volume Information\_restore{07067F02-601B-445E-AF-8E-8602C05A674E}\RP270\A0052667.exe

Do you think this was removed?

Hi Ana Maria,

That is not the full SDFix report.

There is a lot of other information that is important.

Please post the full Report.txt. This is saved in the SDFix folder.

Now in the SDFix folder there are many other txt documents - are these what you are in need of?

Hello Ana Maria,

Not the result I had expected from SDFix for that infection. Lets try this one.

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Posted Image

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Posted Image

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it will produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt together with a new HijackThis log in your next reply.

Hello Ana Maria,

Please do not colour your logs. There is two reasons for this, firstly, it makes them hard to read and secondly; occasionally the tools we use will highlight a particular item in a colour (often red) so that we don't miss it. When you colour you log we can't see that warning.

Let me know if I need to do this again - as of this morning the Generic Artimis is still there.

Yes we have a bit to do before we can say we have got rid of this one.

Now

Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is mostly installed without users approval. This changed from what we know in 2006 read this article:

http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546

SpyShredder is a Rogue AntiSpyware program that is a security risk that may give exaggerated reports of threats on the computer. The program then prompts the user to purchase a registered version of the software in order to remove the reported threats.

I recommend removal of this program. Click on Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs uninstall the following if they exist: Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player, SpyShredder.

Next

You may have used Malwarebytes before. If you have and still have it on your machine please update and run. Post the scan report back here.

If you do not have Malwarebytes please download from Here or Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

When you return please post
  • MBAM report
  • a new HijackThis log

Kaspersky on line scanner is very thorough. It can take a long time and for periods may seem not to be working. Just be patient and let it do its job.

Kaspersky works with Internet Explorer and Firefox 3. It uses Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Java 1.6.0_7 or later.

Your version of Java does not comply, please download JavaRa to your desktop and unzip it to its own folder
  • Run JavaRa.exe, pick the language of your choice and click Select. Then click Remove Older Versions.
  • Accept any prompts.
  • Open JavaRa.exe again and select Search For Updates.
  • Select Update Using Sun Java's Website then click Search and click on the Open Webpage button. Download and install the latest Java Runtime Environment (JRE) version for your computer.
Now go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
Copy and paste that information in your next post.

So when you return please post
  • SuperAntiSpyWare log
  • Kaspersky scan results
  • and a new HijackThis log
