Please go to the malware forum and follow the instructions at the top....Especially the CLICK HERE.

That will give you several steps that will help you clean up 70 percent of all problems by yourself. If at the end of the process you are still having difficulty--and you may not be-- then post a hijackthis log in THAT forum.

No need for such a drastic measure.

To be honest in my opinion no malware comes through msn from what I have seen in the past. You have to accept anything before doing a file transfer within the program, now as far as emails go if you don't know what it is just leave it alone.

Also make sure that no-one else can send you a message/file through msn and you will remain quite happy :)

So to claify, don't open emails unless you know who they are from and don't accept file transfers.

:)

direct quote from Msoft call center executive when asked about MSN issues on a machine that processes credit card information for a carwash, we had talked with other techs to try and get around these errors they'd never dealt with before because my dad was trying to use it as a browser to configure specialty equipment and he refused to just get firefox like I told him. "Personally I would remove MSN completely and use Internet explorer and Outlook for everything you need.. MSN is great for home users but I discourage it's use on a machine that handles that type of information, it gets it's fingers into everything, which is what it's supposed to do but that's not necessarily a good thing 100 percent of the time." which basically means [it's full of loopholes and back doors but I don't want to tell you that.]

not only that but it's a resource hog times a thousand.

but as long as you're careful I'm sure you could avoid most if not all virus and un-targeted security issues.

good luck!

I am pretty new to GeekU, but I am not so new on the topic of malware. I have come to GeekU to get a better understanding, but that isnt to say that I dont know at least a little bit.

As far as I see it, if you follow the advice given above, you can avoid any complications. Simple as that. I have never heard of any major loopholes being executed aginst MSN or Windows Live messenger systems. M$ trys to do a good job at keeping them clean(They dont even allow transfer of Executible files unless they are ziped, or you set the messengers to allow them.)

Heres a simple rule of thumb. If your friend sends you a file, conferm it by asking them if they sent it. If it was malware, your friend may not even know that the file was sent.
And be sure to only accept file transfers from people that you have known for a while, but always conferm no matter what.

As far as I see it any kind of malware should ONLY be given from a malware expert. And that is the position of this forum.
I know some stuff about malware as well, but I follow the rules here as so should every one else.
This topic is closed so that no more malware advice will be given here.
