ived used this site before and had great success so im hoping that someone can help now. my wife uses her new dell to work everyday and yesterday internet explorer stopped working. i used another computer to download firefox and that worked fine only her work application was not working with firefox. i then tried to download update to windows ie and that did not work. I then tried to download ie8 beta to see if that would work. Nothing worked. I then decided to reinstall the os with the disk that came from dell. I made it all the way through the install page after 3 hours but the computer seemed to hang at the end. Black screen but the mouse cursor was still working. i searched on;ine and someone had the same issue. i did what they said and shutdown and reinstalled. Windows never came up. I tried rebooting direct from the disk through the setup menu and the same thing happened. Black screen and hanging up. Now i get a error that says " bootmgr not installed" i have everything dell sent but the warranty just ran out in november. i dont know what to do..... thanks in advance for any help i can get.

It sounds to me like a bad hard drive. If you have access to another system, you can download the drive diags from the drive manufacture.
I would suggest running chkdsk from recovery console. I don't think you have an normal cp cd, just the dell recovery disk.
If you don't have an
XP cd, download RC.iso and burn it to a cd as an ISO image. You may need a burning tool like ISO Recorder to do this...be sure to get the version for the operating system you'll be creating the disk on. To access a system restore file, try the following...
Boot from the Windows XP installation CD...after the first several screens load, you will be given a choice to choose R for Recovery Console[. You will then be asked to log in. Choose the installation to be repaired by number (usually 1) and press "Enter". When you are asked for the Administrator password, leave it blank and press "Enter".

- Insert the Windows XP startup disk into the floppy disk drive, or insert the Windows XP CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive, and then restart the computer.
Note:Click to select any options that are required to start the computer from the CD-ROM drive if you are prompted to do so. - When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to start the Recovery Console.
Note:If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot computer, select the installation that you want to access from the Recovery Console. - When you are prompted to do so, type the Administrator password. If the administrator password is blank, just press ENTER.
- At the Recovery Console command prompt, type the following then press Enter:
chkdsk /r
- Allow this to run UNDISTURBED until completed (45 min or so)
- Report any errors
