My mouse is stalling

I am having the weirdest problem. I use vista home edition.

This happened once before and I ran a spyware and it seemed to get rid of it. Doesn't work this time.

My mouse keeps pausing endlessly it seems at times....like it is busy waiting for something and there are 2 notes that play. 2 up and then 2 down. Yes, like something is telling me it is busy. I guess. I CAN move the mouse with my fingers on the ball itself. I have tried setting it on different things and nothing works. It is particularly bad going to the right. It just seems to hang there and there is often a swirling green like my computer is busy. HELP. I don't think this is a mouse problem per se. The mouse works and then the computer screws up, is my assessment.
