Vista installation leftovers, filling whole drive C

Since I have worked with Adobe programs, my space on drive C has continuosly filled up. I recently noticed an Adobe update and ran it. Shockingly I saw about 4.5GB of my C space going out the window.

Trying to uninstall the updates and uneeded Adobe stuff with Windows clean up utility didn't solve much, at very most 1GB was freed.

Using msizap G! worked well for me on my old computer with XP operating system, but on this new laptop I get a long list of errors (around 40):
"Error opening....... Products key for S-1-5-18 user. Error:2"

Also I notices the winsxs folder gains enormous sizes with every new program and I read it's specific for Vista. In the top 100 files over 5o% are from there. Is there any possibility to delete unneeded rests there or move the folder?

Also, maybe not directly related, but even when I had more space, Vista started giving me errors in Excel or Internet Explorer, asking to restart. Excel is unfunctional now, whenever I try to open a new file it closes down.

It seems with every new program installed my computer will constantly get filled with junk. Right now I managed to keep around 2,5 GB free, but I think those install junks are keeping at least 5GB of my C space. :)
Please help!

Hi Kristina,

I have to admit your questions are a bit confusing. It seems like you're saying that your C: is running out of free space, and every time you install a program, you notice a large part consumed by this new program.

Is this what you're saying?

Hi, Troy! Yes, with every new program (especially those from Adobe) C space gets filled up. The problem is after several installs and uninstalls the space occupied on C:Windows grows, even though I have removed the program.

I'm sure it must be from installation leftovers and backups that Vista makes with every new program. I don't know how I can delete all that.

When running msizap G! to remove orphaned files a number of 40 entries was listed, but each got the error I mentioned above. :)

I've never heard of this msizap program before, but it seems like it removes orphaned msi program installers...

Have you run ATF Cleaner? (In my signature)

Have you run Disk Cleanup? (on your computer)

Are you able to find the folder where the most data is installed?

OMG, I ran ATF cleaner and from 2,5GB it's now up to 7GB! Thanks! About what I had the other days before installing those Adobe updates. :)

Disk Cleanup didn't find anything more to clean.

I ran TuneUp space explorer again and 76% of data is in the windows folder. Most of it is still in the winsxs folder (6.22 GB). I see I'm able to access it.

I have been helped with msizap G! in this topic:

I ran it again now, after cleaning with ATF cleaner, and those 40 installation leftovers still appear, but still with the error.

I don't think that msizap program is going to help you any further. It seems like it's designated for specific problems.

What Adobe programs do you have installed?

I have Adobe Photoshop, Premiere, Audition and Dreamweaver CS3.
I also had Adobe Acrobat 8.0, but it occupied huge space so I replaced it with Adobe Reader 9.0. Don't think it did any good, since on C it still seems to occupy a lot, though in Program files (in the D folder) it takes less space.

I used to have Adobe Flash as well but uninstalled it.

I see I also have installed Adobe bridge, Device central, Extension manager, Stock photos, Flash video encoder, Extended script toolkit 2. Don't know what these work for since I've never used them and they just came up when installing the others. I also couldn't find where to uninstall them since only Extended script tool kit appears in add/remove.

You could try using Foxit PDF Reader instead, it's lighter on system resources.

Just make sure to uncheck the Ask Toolbar during installation!

Other than that, it sounds like you've got some serious programs installed on this computer, so there's the tradeoff...

Thank you, I tried Foxit Reader and it's very easy for viewing pdf. :) However I can't make pdfs without the trial tags on each page, but I guess that's the trade.

I was wondering if there's any way to get rid of the last Adobe programs I mentioned: Bridge, Device central, Extension manager, Stock photos, Flash video encoder....I don't know what they stand for and I couldn't find anywhere how to uninstall them.

Try looking in Control Panel > Programs and Features.

You should be able to select each program and uninstall them from there.

I had installed Photoshop and Dreamweaver with a pack (creative suite) so I uninstalled the whole pack thinking it would get me rid of those unwanted things too. Funny thing is AFTER uninstalling my C drive lost 1 whole GB instead of freeing up, while those Bridge, Device Center, extension manager are still in the program files. I ran ATF cleaner but nothing got cleaned now....I really don't get it. Somewhere else these Adobe programs must be leaving something behind.

Are you able to remove the "Bridge", "Device Center", and "Extension Manager" programs through the Control Panel also?

No, they are not in the Control Panel. I only managed to uninstall the extended toolscript 2 from there.

Edit: When I restarted, Extended script tool 2 was again there, also Adobe common color settings. Maybe these 2 are needed for Photoshop to work? For now I kept another version of Photoshop (not the one that came with the CS3 pack which I uninstalled), so maybe it's using those things...?

Also, I don't know where to post this, but maybe still here in the Vista section I could get help.
Lately I cannot open some of the avi files (not all of them, just some it seems).
What could be the problem? Till now I didn't have problems with avi files.
