I'm not sure why the videos stopped working, perhaps uninstalling one of those particular programs removed the codecs needed for certain .avi files.

Try VLC Media Player, see if it will play your movies.

When it really comes down to it, I don't have much personal experience with Adobe programs. Your best bet would be to contact Adobe Support directly, I'm sure they'll be happy to help.

Cheers

Space is quickly filling up again! I had managed to keep 7GB free, now it's down to 4GB! I am absolutely clueless what keep filling my C drive.

I recently ran a Windows automatic update, and I think that was the moment it mostly filled up. I ran TuneUp utilities to clear up backups, something like 1 GB appeared as backup but then nothung appeared in the detailed view and I couldn't delete anything. I ran ATF cleaner, nothing left to clean.

I think there must be some install backups created that are filling my space. Will this happen at each big Windows update? I have this comp with Vista just for a few months and already I barely have space on it.

I uninstalled all adobe programs besides Photoshop and Audition, but still remained with all kinds of stuff from adobe i don't know how to erase. The problem I think are the .msi install files and installation backups and all the stuff kept in winsxs.

I don't get it...if it goes on like this, in a few months I'll nearly have 0 space left.

I found some reading for you on the WinSXS folder, it seems to explain it rather well. Read here.

The interesting point is that if you have a lot of programs installed, the WinSXS folder could be very large. I suggest you go through and completely uninstall all unneeded programs on your computer.

How big is your hard drive?

I'm starting to get a bit confused by this, so perhaps try running through these instructions and see if anything comes up.

Cheers

Hey try this program... All it does is scan your hard drive and show you a labeled graphical representation of every file on your computer, very easy to see what is taking up how much.

Thank you, Troy!

I have 19,5 GB on C and 278 on D. From these I'm left with 5GB on C (the value curiously changes, it was 4 before) and 209GB on D (curiosly when I run space explorer with TuneUp Utilities only around 30GB are explained, I don't know what's taking the rest 30).

I had already gone through that post and I don't know what could help me with space problem from there. I ran ATF cleaner and most of the other programs are for spyware/malware, which I appear to be clean of now as I was helped in another topic.

The problem is with the C drive and indeed the winsxs folder, which is getting huge. I had already found the article you mentioned about winsxs and it only scared me more...looks from there that Vista is a lot worse than XP!

The thing is I indeed installed and uninstalled many programs, especially Adobe ones, which left traces in the winsxs folder, even though the programs are now gone. So I don't know what to uninstall more. The problem is these install traces....

As I already said, I cleared considerable space with msizap G! (which removes orphaned installation patches) in XP, but in Vista it somehow doesn't work for me and gives me 40 something errors for each patch that it's trying to remove.

To oyzomangno, I'm already using TuneUp disk space explorer. It seems to show pretty clearly what's taking up my space...the dll's in winsxs take something huge...

Okay so your C: (where Vista is installed) is only about a 20GB hard drive? That's way too small!

I'm using about 55GB on my Vista install at the moment, including a few games (which take up a fair bit of space).

wow... you can get away with a hard drive that small on XP usually... but Vista... no way...

Well, the person who made my partitions asked me whether I use many games/big programs, and as I said not really he thought 20GB would be enough. Apparently I needed some bigger programs and I'll be in a bit of trouble if I need to install something big from now on.

Anyway, the orphaned patches problem is still bugging me and I'm having some more hope with that.
As I run msizap G! to remove orphaned files, these are the errors I get (it's a screenshot read, so a few errors here):

(there are a few more, but I can't print screen).

FAILED to clear all data."

Is there a way to track where all this stuff is located and delete it manually?

I could search them with total commander, but I don't know where to look.

I have no personal experience with the msizap program, so I cannot help you there.

If this was my computer, I'd backup all my data and start again, this time making plenty more space available on the C: partition.
