I have a new Dell XPS 420. It has Vista home. No matter what I try to do, Vista effortlessly stymies me. I want to transfer my emails from my older computer (Dell Dimension 3000, outlook express) to my Vista mail. No dice, it says the old emails are MSG files. It doesn't recognize them. So I go online, there are a bunch of MSG to regular email file converters. I have tried several. They download, but won't work unless I have outlook express on the new computer. So I try to download outlook express into my new computer. I download it, try to install and it tells me it is not supported in my computer's 32/64 bit platform. And that was the OE specifically for Vista! Dead in the water.

I try to install my trusty HP 722c printer. I had to buy a printer to USB cable to even attach it to my new computer. I have the HP disk with the drivers. It says it is not compatable. BUT Vista has the drivers already loaded for the HP 720 series printers. SO, I load the drivers that way, the computer recognizes the printer, it lists it as the default printer, the printer is on, paper and ink loaded. I can select a document to print, but that's all that happens. It doesn't print. Nothing happens. Its like the computer is connected to a rock. No response. I have unloaded, reloaded, uninstalled, reinstalled, nada. I have 3 of these printers, 2 are new in the box. Same thing will every one of them. Nothing. I have purchased several back-up ink cartridges, and this is the best printer I have ever used, most reliable, best printing, etc. I emailed HP support. No response. I emailed Dell. They said contact HP. Dead in the water again.

And if I can't install the printer, it sure as heck won't take the scanner.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi there dustman,

1) Windows Mail. Have you tried to export your messages from Outlook Express, and then Import them into Windows Mail? It sounds like you are trying to manually copy them over.

2) Printer. Have you tried installing the printer using these instructions? If so, perhaps try to completely uninstall the printer, reboot, and try to install again, following the instructions.

Cheers

Thanks for the response, Troy!

I transferred my emails from my old computer (outlook express) to my new computer (Vista mail) by using a USB flash drive. That's when it informed me that the messages were MSG files and could not be opened. I downloaded several supposed MSG converters but each one says it is not supported by my new computer's platform (32 or 64 bit). I get the same response when I try to download Outlook Express into the new computer (any version, including the one specifically for Vista.) Is there any other work around for this?

On the printer, I think I went through that info on the HP website and it didn't work. I will try it again.

Thanks again for the response.

Ok, I have spent the most of the day and night trying to find a work-around to use my HP 722c printer with my new Dell XPS 420 64-bit Vista. It looks like thousands of people are experiencing the same thing. I can get the printer to be recognized, I can make it the default printer, it will respond to print commands, but all it does is shoot out blank paper, no printing whatsoever. I have tried solution after solution, but none of them work. One person had mentioned that the HP720 driver already in Vista is only a very basic driver and will not activate many (if any) of the functions, that there were more things on the original HP722c install disk that have been left out on the Vista basic driver. I have the original install disk, and Vista will not accept it or let it run, saying it is incompatable. Dead end. But when I open the disk (don't try to install) there are a lot of things on it: CSY; DAN; DEU; ENU; ESM; FIN; FRA; HUN; ITA; NLD; NON; PLI; PTB; RUS; SVC; as well as AUTORUN; DIAG.PRN; HEPJ720C; HPOPNP.DLL; HPSETUP; and SETUP.

How and where can I install these individual items to see if they fix the problem? And which items would likely be the right ones? There has GOT to be a way to do this!

Any input greatly appreciated!

I'm not sure about the printer. It may very well be a dead-end. The fact that Vista is telling you that the program is incompatible means I highly doubt you'll get anywhere with the drivers install disc.

As for your email messages, Import and Export are specific functions used for moving your email messages from one program to another. In your original program, you'll want to export your messages. Then on the new program, you'll want to import these messages. Most often you'll find these menu options under File Menu.

Cheers

Hi, again, Troy,

I understand the import/export procedure, but OE emails are all in MSG format, Vista doesn't recognize MSG files. I have tried downloading MSG converters but they don't work in Vista. Another dead end.

Have you exported your messages yet, using the File Menu > Export function? I'm pretty sure you are able to export them into a single file, and you can specify what type it will be. Then you select one that Vista Mail can import (check on Vista Mail first).
