Why would you want to go back to 8 years old OS, especially with Windows 7 coming sooner, or later?
Vista gives you perfect training for Win 7.

well because ever since I've it vista programs just randomly freeze up and stop responding. I then have to restart my computer to get everythign back to normal. I never had any problems like this with xp.

Now, you need to clarify.I never had any problems like this with xp.
Did the laptop have XP previously installed, or....?
Please, post some computer info:
- processor type, amount of RAM (hold Windows logo key, hit Pause/Break key)
- hard drive size/free space (open "My Computer", right click on hard drive letter, click "Properties")

Howdy:
Did you go to the HP website and search your system to see if XP drivers were available?
If they don't make the drivers then you are stuck with Vista.. or you could go the Linux route.

Your laptop's specs are perfectly fine to run Vista on it.
There must be some (hardware/software) reasons for freezing.
I'd start with making sure, your computer is clean.....
I suggest you go to the Malware Forum and run all the steps located in the START HERE. These self-help tools will help you clean up 70% of problems on your own. If you are still having problems after doing the steps, then please post a HiJackThis Log in THAT forum. If you are unable to run and/or post a HJT log, then post that in your initial post in the topic you create in that forum.
If you are still having problems after being given a clean bill of health from the malware expert, then please return to THIS thread and we will pursue other options to help you solve your current problem(s).
