Hello

Not used to asking for help but i will do my best to describe my problem.

I am trying to upgrade this pc from XP Pro to Vista (yes yes i know but I like vista)
Anyway i have both 32 bit and 64 bit. Neither will install. Lets go over what happens.
32 bit I try to install bot from within XP and from boot. In xp it does the normal upgrade thing then when it reboots it freezes. when i boot back to xp it says it couldnt install and that it has moved back to my original os.
With a boot install it does the first normal screen for the install (loading bar for drivers i think it is) and freezes. It does the same for 64 bit as well.
Now the system.
This is a dual chip with dual cores amd system. has 2 nvidia 512 video cards and a sata drive. I have boot from cd as priority in the BIO's and i think that's it.

I have no idea what is going on. It even does this with win7 32 and 64 bit.

If any more info is needed please ask ill be sure to help with what i can.
and before anyone asks yes all legal copy's just ask Kat :)

Oh and I have tried burning the discs slower that didnt seem to help.

Legally bought?
Why are you trying an upgrade, instead of clean install, which is always better?

Yes they are legal. You can ask Kat on that one. I have tried both actually clean and upgrade. Neither will work.

So, I assume, the hard drive has all old partitions removed, new partition created, and formatted, correct?

Yes they do, two partitions both are formated. I don't know but part of me thinks its because of the sata drive and not picking up the drivers for some reason.

Just a note, this is my fiancee, living in my house, using a copy of Vista I obtained for MY machine, via my MVP TechNet subscription. If it's not legal... someone at Msft is in big trouble. :) :)

Hello mouse...and congratulations to both you and Kat!

Sounds like a hardware problem alright. Usually, though, when doing an upgrade, the installation process will discover the SATA drivers that XP uses and use them. Do you receive a window during the install that shows the current hard drive and installation and that has a "Load Drivers" button on it?

There is also a possibility that you have some incompatible hardware installed. Have you run the Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor to see whether this is the case?

I have run the upgrade advisor, yes and it did say all was compatible. I can get to the window to choose a drive. this workds fine but it then does its thing and on reboot stalls out. I have left it sitting for a few hours before only to find it does not do anything.

And thank you for the Grats its a great thing :)

hey Rich, and thanks for jumping in here! :)

The computer he's trying to upgrade is the big monster one that I got from Chris last year. It's the quad core. I remember when I got it... it had Linux Mint on it. When I wiped it to put XP on it, a friend had to help me go into the BIOS and change some setting, due to the SATA drive in there. I don't know if that has anything to do with what's going on now? Just thought I'd mention it.

Whatever else info y'all may need, mouse can get and give ya! :)

Ah....it's a quad core..... :)

I'll bet you need to update the BIOS for the OS to recognize the processor.

What kind of mobo does that monster have in it?

It is running a Asustek L1N64-SLIWS

I was looking in the device manager and saw that the mass storage controler driver was not installed, and also an unknown device. thats kinda weird. maybe i should give it a try and see what it says now.
