I am working on a user's HP system with XP Home. He first recieved an app error on backupnotify.exeand prompted to click to terminate. He then got the following error:

backupnotify.exe-
Common Language Runtime Debugging......

Applictation has gererated an exception that could not be handled
Process id=0x108(264), thread id=0x10c(268)

Click OK to terminate, cancel to debug

When cancel is clicked is throws 'no debugger found'.....sounds like a virus but I'm not sure....first, what is this backupnotify.exe? Should I reinstall the HP drivers disk?

the backupnotify.exe is related to HP Digital Imaging. You can try updating the drivers. Also we could take a closer look at what is running on his PC. We'll need you to use a free diagnostic tool (HiJackThis) and post a log back here with the results.

Click the HijackThis Guide in my signature, download it and follow the instructions in the guide.

Most of what it lists will be harmless or even essential, DO NOT delete or modify anything yet! Someone will be along to tell you what steps to take after you post the contents of the scan results.
