Hi,

I have just got a new laptop which is running 64-bit Vista. I use it primarily for music production and DJing. I have an external audio interface (Numark Omni Control) only to find out that it does not have any drivers that support 64-Bit Vista.

Does anyone know how I can get this installed on this operating system? Can I install the drivers in 32-Bit mode or anything like that?

Other alternatives are to format and install Windows XP 32-bit but then I won't be able to fully utilise the 4GB RAM.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Cheers

The difference between running 4 gB on a 32 bit OS and 4 gB on a 64 bit OS isn't noticeable. The stuff that's not read by the 32 bit OS is offset by the higher memory overhead of a 64 bit OS (because the addresses are bigger). More info on this view is in this article: http://www.tomshardw...kshop,1775.html

You may be able to install a 32 bit copy of Vista or XP in a Virtual Machine, then install the drivers in there - but I'd expect that the Virtual Machine probably wouldn't have the responsiveness necessary for using the device in "real time". Plus, I don't have any idea of how you'd mount the device in the Virtual Machine. FWIW - Microsoft has a free Virtual Machine program that you can download from here: http://www.microsoft...;displaylang=en

Beyond that you'll most likely have to format and install 32 bit XP (or Vista if you've got a copy) in order to make use of the equipment.

Thanks Usasma,

I've spoken to Numark and they are releasing 64-Bit drivers imminently as they are currently in test. I am currently in the process of installing XP as a dual boot until the 64-Bit drivers are officially released.

Cheers

That's good to hear. The benefits of 64 bit computing are just starting to be realized in the "real world" - so the change by Numark reflects their intention to remain competitive. A good choice!
