Hi, Stock here. What is the best Antivirus to "Have running on your pc" these days? I have Adware, Spybot, Microsoft OneLive and SpyDoctor...all on Manual, meaning I update them manually and then run them to Scan for Malware, OH! I have Malware Bytes too! Additionally I have my my Microsoft Firewall up too.

But I want to "BUY" and have a resident Antivirus program running for protection.

I have a Dell Demesion 310 desktop and an IBM T-42 laptop, both running XP professional, both have the software mentioned above.

What Antivirus should I purchase??

Thank you everyone,

Avira Antivir

It is good to use, and have tested the beta. It is very powerful.

I also recommend
AVG 8

If you want to buy one, I would recommend NOD32 - I think it's the best one out there.

Free, I'd recommend Avast or Avira antivir.
Paid for, I'd recommend NOD32, Kaspersky, Avira antivir pro, and numerous others.

Kaspersky is good, I used that for a while, I use NOD32 now, I'd recommend that over anything.

We use CA's eTrust ITM (Integrated Threat Manager)at work and it is what we sell and recommend to our clients. It combines CA's eTrust Antivirus with their PestPatrol program for anti-spyware. I like the program and once you get used to the interface, it is quite powerful. It is, however, geared more to corporate users in a larger network environment (it has an ITM "server" and ITM "clients").

I have not used NOD32, but have heard good things about it.

As far as my machines go, I have ITM at home, but have used Avira and Avast! and I like both of those.

Also, I would steer clear of Windows Firewall. Although it tries, it does not always do a good job at blocking unwanted traffic. I have used Sygate Personal Firewall on all my machines for a while now, and I have never had any issues. I have tried ZoneAlarm on various occasions, and find that to be a good firewall program as well.

Let me know if you want/need links to any of these programs.

PS. I'm still mad that Symantec bought out Sygate and started charging for the personal firewall. Then made it completely bloated and useless when they added it to the Norton suite. Good thing you can still find the old, free version on the web!

For NOD32, it has done good in testing. I am sure glad to see that it tested well.

I'm always torn between NOD32 and Kaspersky and I think both are worth every penny. :)

We use Trend in work, so disappointed, I'm trying to get management to go for Kaspersky. Not working too well at the minute.

Trend Micro has been very good to me both at work and home.

Pros: On the enterprise level it great because it is easy to load and if you have a good firewall it should catch about everything else that is being offensively launched against your users.

Cons: On the enterprise level users suffer extreme waiting 1-3 minutes when logging on in the mourning. If your an 24-7 environment you wont suffer this painful interruption.

Pros: At home, its easy to manage, you get three licensees for a great price and if you have 3gb of ram you shouldn't feel the effects of the updates and it gives you the option to scan specific areas / full scan / quick scan and to me that great.

Cons: Its not free and if you have a little processor with a little ram expect to be interrupted for a little while.

So far so good with trend micro + MS updates + and careful use of what I upload and sites I visit, you shouldnt really have any problems with most Anti Virus's
