I have a friend of mine running Windows Vista Basic SP1. He has been getting the update for IE8, stating that it is necessary to download it. I have heard alot of things that are bad about IE8, about how you can't remove it if you install XP's SP3 first, and now I read stuff about it "hosing" people's Vista and XP machines from a Computerworld Blog by Preston Galla: Why IE8 Crashes I am thinking that installing IE8, even in its final release, based on this information is NOT a good idea, and that I should tell him NOT to download it when it comes up for updates.

Has there been any other problems that anyone knows about with IE8? Should I just tell him NOT to install it, and block it, using a Blocking tool? IE7 works well, and I don't feel comfortable advising him to update to IE8 since the vast majority of what I see in this blog post indicates trouble.

Any thoughts on this would be helpful :)

Thank you for your help

Brian

Dragonmaster Jay:

Sounds to me liike what this is telling me is that IE 8 is buggy, and not to trust it: Although, I checked with my mom, running Vista Home Premium and she says IE 8 works well for her. I will still need information from others regarding stability of this browser before I recommend to install this through windows update

Thanks for the interesting read :)

I hate to be "that" guy, but you should suggest another browser such as Firefox.

IE8 for what I have used of it here on a test machine seems to have its quirks but inherently faster then IE7. The major benefit would be that Microsoft is finally adopting all commonly used web standards today (finally). I think it also passed one of the Acid2 tests.

I wouldnt approve it via WSUS yet though :)

At work I've stopped installing IE8 on XP systems - just too many issues that I can't sort out (and I can't use Dial-A-Fix with it).
As for Vista, I don't seem to see as many problems with it there - so I'll continue installing it there.
