How to get film from DVD-R to iTunes

Hey! I have recorded a TV programme off of the television onto a DVD-R disc, and now want to put it in iTunes, or at least onto my computer, only it is in completely the wrong format, and i have no idea how to get it into the right one - i know you can rip CDs using windows media player, but this doesn't work for DVDs - any advice???
