Hi all,

I am a first time laptop user, hence the questions i asked maybe a little irritating, and i apologize for that.

-The problem is this, my laptop HP pavilion dx4( i bought it less than 3 months), is getting slower and slower. When i boot my laptop, it takes around 3mins to get everything start up and ready for usage.

-When i wanted to start up mozilla firefox, it always lag for a moment around 10seconds before it starts up. Hence i was wondering how do i make my laptop run faster?

Addition Question:
What does it mean when desktop/laptop is stable?
And is there anyway to check if my laptop is running normally?

Thank you!

Download Autoruns for Windows: http://technet.micro...s/bb963902.aspx
No installation required.
Simply unzip Autoruns.zip file, and double click on autoruns.exe file to run the program.
Go File>Export As, and save AutoRuns.txt file to know location.
Attach the file to your next reply.

Alternatively, you could modify start-up applications via MSCONFIG.

Microsoft does not recommend using MSCONFIG as a startup manager. Additionally, I've encountered issues that couldn't be fixed (in Vista) when customers were using MSCONFIG as a startup manager.

Autoruns may seem a bit complicated, but it's a very good program.
You can also disable startups in Windows Defender. I believe it's located in the Software Explorer there.

I haven't heard of the sort before.

Could you provide a few links so I may inform myself?

Eh, I've never encountered any troubles, nor heard of any woes beyond people disabling things they shouldn't have.

Could you provide a link to back-up your statements?

As far, as I'm aware of, the only dangerous part of using msconfig is to try to enable Safe Mode through it.
The computer may end up being stuck in Safe Mode.
Disabling/enabling startups should be fine.

Here's a link that describes Microsoft's position on using it in XP: http://support.micro....aspx/kb/310560

And here's an article that contains the Microsoft recommended way of managing startups in XP and Vista: http://support.micro....com/kb/270035/
While the article is by no means comprehensive, the most significant thing is that it doesn't even mention the System Configuration Utility (MSCONFIG).

As for my difficulties with it in Vista, I haven't documented that and can't recall the exact circumstances. I seem to recall that it's related to access-denied messages, but can't remember the details. I'll be sure to document it if/when it happens again, and will post the results to this thread.

In Vista, number of applets, and programs have to be "Run as Administrator".
If ran from "Start search", hold CTRL, and SHIFT, then press Enter to achieve same result.

It seems the articles get hung-up in the technicality of MSCONFIG modifying items that launch before log-on. Here's a good argument against it, though: http://forums.majorg...ad.php?t=149804

Although, it's rather old and I'm not sure how much truth it holds these days in newer operating systems. Notwithstanding, I had always used MSCONFIG for XP, nothing bad ever happened.

Apparrently applications might not uninstall properly, but I think it's pretty obvious to allow a program to start on start-up if it needs to restart to fully uninstall.

Software Explorer is apparently gone in Windows 7, so it's sad to see an integrated feature leave like that.
