This copy of Windows did not pass genuine validation. shows up on my pc at start up my desk top turned black and it said I be in infecteded
said I may be a victim of counterfeieiting
said if I want to resolve it to run WGAPlugin but it still said my XP pro license was not valid

First, navigate to C:\Windows\Downloaded Program Files. Within that folder, remove any files or folders associated with .WGA

Reboot your computer and as soon as Windows logs off, and starts up again, hold or press F8 at the first logo screen. As soon as you see the Windows Advanced Startup options select Safe Mode. Within Safe Mode get yourself into these folders…

C:\Windows\System32 (Rename wgatray.exe to wgatrayold.exe)

C:\Windows\System32\dllcache (Rename wgatray.exe to wgatrayold.exe)
(remember Dllcache is a hidden folder, to view hidden folders do the following, go to Start, Control Panel, Folder Options,Select the view Tab and under the Hidden Files option, select Show hidden files and folders)

After that go to: Start > Run and type regedit and click OK. Within the Registry Editor navigate your self to HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify\WGALOGON. Right Click and Export the WGALOGON Folder (this should be saved onto your machine for backup purposes) After Exporting the folder, DELETE the WGALOGON folder

After deleting close all applications and Restart your machine back to Normal Mode

Go to http://www.microsoft.com/genuine

Get into the site above and manually re-validate your copy of Windows.

After being prompt of a successful validation, Restart your Machine.

Please run the MGA Diagnostic Tool and post the report it produces:

• Download MGADiag to your desktop.
• Double-click on MGADiag.exe to launch the program.
• Click Continue.
• Ensure that the Windows tab is selected. (It should be by default.)
• Click the Copy button to copy the MGA Diagnostic Report to the Windows clipboard.
• Paste the MGA Diagnostic Report into your next reply.

after doing those things last night I shut down my pc and this morning restarted and then went to control panel and changed my deck top back ground back to what it was. Then restarted my pc again and my deck top remained as it all ways has been and it did not pop up that warning that said may be a victim of counterfeieiting.
But when I went into microsoft genuine and ran it again it still said my XP pro license was not valid. XP is working find, so, I just dont know I would not copy this report so I typed it in for you.. is my pc ok?

What did you use for an XP install cd?

Did the system come with XP installed?

If so, what is the make and model?

You may have to call Microsoft to get it validated. They will need the key code and will be able to determine if it is one of the counterfieted key codes/installs floating around the net.

Did they give you the Compaq restore disks as well? Good chance it is a bad copy of XP. Use the Call Microsoft option and see if they will validate it. If they determine it to be a counterfeit, your only option would be to charge the seller and have them supply you with a legit version or buy your own copy of XP.

If its a VLK (volumn license key) it will eventually get blocked and fail WGA.
Sometimes WGA will also fail. You need to call Microsoft as suggested.

I didnt get any disks with the pc.. I'll have to get intouch with the guy I got it from and see if he has any of them. What I dont understand is the pc has been working fine all this time and its still working fine. could it chash from all of this

It shouldn't. You should be able to still get Security updates from Microsoft, but you won't be able to get anything else.

Try the "Phone Microsoft" route. It is Toll Free.

Have you got your computer set to accept updates from Microsoft, If so thats were your problem lie's, the update's can do more harm than good, the last update i accepted (a while ago now) killed my Firewall and wouldn't let me connect to the net.

I also have this annoying message coming up all day long on my Vista 64bit system. When I run WGADIAG it says my system is genuine, which it is. Meanwhile I am unable to get updates from Mocrosoft until this is resolved. I have not been able to find any of the WGA files/programs that need to be renamed and deleted as indicated in your resolution of the problem on my system.
