What browser/version?
Same thing in different browser?
Do you have Windows sounds?
Do CDs, and DVDs play OK?

Try installing the K-Lite codec pack, and then run the "Codec Tweak Tool" by navigating through to:
Start > Programs > K-Lite Codec Pack > Configuration > Codec Tweak Tool
and check the box next to [Registry] Fix non-working system sound.
Hope this helps!

using the latest version of firefox. no sound with IE either. i currently do not get windows sounds anymore either (ie. no startup sound). CD's do not play ok. only thing that seems to play are mp3's that i currently have on my hard drive.
tried to K-Lite fix with no luck. this is extremley frustrating.

This is pretty weird, that you can get a sound from mp3, but nothing else.
I'd start with reinstalling sound driver.

I can however play files and get sound with VLC media player only. But this still does not fix the browser issue, also I don’t want this to be the only media player I can use.

What worries me more is the fact, you don't have any Windows sounds.
Did you uninstall current sound driver, before installing new one?
Where did the new driver come from?

If the above doesn't work, I'm afraid, your on-board audio chip is malfunctioning.
You may need to get real sound card (starting at about 15 bucks).
