Hey guys, I need your help yet again.
Running on Vista Home Basic at the moment and trying to keep my password from expiring. My account is an admin but, in Command Prompt after typing in :

net account /maxpwage:unlimited (or any number for that matter)

I get this message:

System 5 error has occurred.
Access denied.

Can anyone help me out so that I may retain my current password, please? It expires in 2 days and this is the millionth time I've had to change it and I'm running out of memory in my head to handle any more.

with windows you have multiple ways of changing this info. why are you trying to change it from command line? With UAC enabled, you need to launch cmd window from Start, Programs, Accessories. This will prompt for the uac to allow it. Otherwise you are not running cmd.exe with admin rights.

As much as I hate to admit it, I was following advice from another forum.

Another embarrassing confession, I have no idea what cmd or UAC are.
I have accessed the command prompt via start, programs, accessories each time I've tried as well. This time, I get a message stating "the syntax of the command is...". What am I doing wrong?

cmd = command prompt
uac = user account control.

Lets try two thins

Press Start button > go to Accessories > right-click Command Prompt > select
"Run as administrator" > type into the prompt: net accounts
/maxpwage:unlimited > Enter

If that fails, please go to control panel, user accounts. On the Right side it will list the account on the pc along with privilege level. For example, mine shows Starjax / administrator.

To add a little more info for those who are wondering. In vista with UAC enabled. The command prompt is run as a limited user (even on the administrator account) to prevent malware from using a batch script or the like to change protected system settings. This means that changing any protected system setting requires you to run the command prompt as an administrator (as shown above).

When you have UAC enabled and you are not a member of the Administrators group, if you try to run any program with elevation (Run as administrator) the system will prompt you to select a user with Admin privileges and enter is password. If you don't provide this the command will fail to run.
