Hi guys.
I've checked the other topics on this problem but mine is a bit different.
I use windows vista on my laptop. The first time I got the message saying AUTOCHK program not found there was a blue screen involved. (I have norton)
And I could still boot my computer on and go my merry way.
Then there was nothing wrong with it yesterday and today it's started again.
But this time I get a black screen saying Autochk can't be found just before it goes to my login.

Now I've tried looking it up in the system32 there is an autochk.exe.mui file.
I followed some steps I read in one of these topics. There was something about going to regedit and changing the text in BOOTEXE. But the thing is... the text in bootexe was just fine. I still saved the sesman and sesman001 on my desktop.
But rebooting it still gave me the same black screen and the same message.

So what to do??

Thanks!

Try using the free program Autoruns ( http://www.microsoft...s/Autoruns.mspx ) to track the entry down and see if it's pointing to the correct location (it's in the Boot Execute tab).

If it's in the correct place, then try running Startup Repair from your installation DVD ( http://www.bleepingc...utorial148.html )

If you don't have an installation DVD, check this link: http://usasma.vox.co...epair-isos.html

hi there! thanks for your reply.

Running the autoruns tells me : file not found:autochk

should I still do the Startup repair anyway?

That means that the program wasn't able to locate the autocheck.exe file in the C:\Windows\System32 subdirectory.

Run the Startup Repair - it's supposed to fix boot issues, but I don't know if this will qualify as a boot issue for Startup Repair.

If it doesn't fix it, then first thing to try would be running SFC.EXE /SCANNOW from an elevated Command Prompt. To do this, go to Start and type in "cmd" (without the quotes). Then, at the top of the search box, right click on the CMD.EXE that's there and select "Run as administrator". Then type the SFC.EXE /SCANNOW text into the black window, press Enter, and wait for it to finish. Let us know what it says when it finishes - and go ahead and reboot to see if it fixed it.

If it didn't fix it, then you'll need a copy of autochk.exe to put in the C:\Windows\System32 subdirectory. I've placed a copy from my Vista SP2 (64 bit) installation here: URL REMOVED BY USASMA As with any unknown file, scan it with your antivirus BEFORE opening it. Once you're assured that it's safe, place it in the C:\Windows\System32 subdirectory and reboot to see if it works.

Worst case is that it won't work (for several different reasons), but we may get luck and it could work. Please post back with the results as I'd like to delete it from my Box.net account as soon as I know.

I ended up re-installing the entire windows vista bit.

Thanks for your help though. Really appreciated it :)
