A few days ago I visited a wordpress.com forum. To make this as simple as possible I will give a brief overview of what was taking place. It is basically a site designed to bring negative attention to a family member of mine. I posted anonymously and told them very nicely that I did not appreciate their site. They let me know they knew my IP address and I said "That's nice." Ever since then my computer has been barely going when I am online. I have to wait for pages to load for a long time. I have a desktop and a laptop linked through a wireless router. Today when I turned on my laptop it gave me some message along these lines "Network error. This IP address is being used by another computer." I clicked OK and continued on my merry way. It did not give me any problems after that. However, the people running this Wordpress site are VERY knowledgeable in computers. I am not. I did some digging and downloaded the Process and Port Analyzer 2.0 to see if they were somehow hacked into my router using my IP address. Here's the problem - I don't know what is supposed to be listed and what is not. How do I know what is considered an intruder? Also, do you have any other ideas of and safety precautions I may want to take or other programs to be running? I have McAfee and that is about it. Thanks so much in advance.

The first step here would be to see if you're infected.
Post in the Malware forums for assistance: http://www.geekstogo...emoval-f37.html

Post back here when you're clean and we'll work on the rest of it.

I followed the steps listed in the Malware forum. I had 4 trojans and 2 other things. I removed them. Am I supposed to copy and paste my log here? Is that safe? Does it give out any personal information? Again, thanks so much. I appreciate it!

No need to post the logfiles.
Are you still having the problems that you had before you removed the malware?

Yes. Today my laptop gave me the same message again. I have had this same setup for over a year now and I have never had one problem. Thanks again!

Shut down both the Desktop and the Laptop (completely - not hibernate or standby).
Restart one and wait 3 minutes, then restart the other.
Does the message still pop up?

Since it's a wireless router, do you have any security on the router (WEP, WPA, etc)?

Thank you for your patience. I restarted both machines and the message did not pop up. I do not know how to check to see if I have security on my router. Could you tell me? Also, do you think my system has been hacked into? Where did the trojans come from? Thanks again!

Most trojans are unknowingly downloaded by clicking on something seemingly innocent.

If the folks in the malware forums said you were clean - then you're clean.

As for security on your router, what is the exact make, model, and revision of it (usually on a sticker on the bottom of it).

Westell doesn't provide support for these models, they recommend that you contact Bell South for assistance.

Thanks. I will contact them. I just got the message again. This time I wrote it down: Windows had detected and IP address conflict.

Another computer on this network has the same IP address as this computer. Contact your network administrator for help resolving this issue. More details are available in the Windows System Event Log.
