Hi people!!

I have a problem if I click on change background or press ctrl, Alt, Delete or run a slideshow my pc freezes for about 30 seconds or more. I've looked every where for help so joined geeks to Go to see if anyone has had the same problem. I've also had to turn off the UAC as the screen goes black for ages.I've ran various registery cleaners and changed my graphics driver but still have the same problem.

Windows Vista doesn't handle any sort of cleaning/tweaking very well. Id recommend if possilbe to undo any changes made by the registry cleaners. Most cleaners include a recovery or undo function.

What Antivirus is installed in the machine?

I used mcaffe until recently I switched to Norton 360 though I've had this problem for about 8 months now and apart from doing a recovery back to factory settings I've kind of given up, as 99% of the time the PC works fine it's just a couple of random actions that causes the problems.

Try opening up Task Manager and go to the Processes tab.
Then click on the "Show processes from all users" button
Then click on the View menu item, then on the Select columns menu item

Select the "I/O Reads" and the "I/O Other" options and click OK to exit
Resize the window so that you can see most everything
Then use Ctrl-Alt-Del or change the background and see what image name takes up the most stuff (most likely in the I/O Other or I/O Reads - but it could be another column also).

Let us know that it may give us a clue as to what's causing this. If it's a Windows process, we may have to use Process Explorer (a free utility) to see what threads are taking up the most time.
