TROJAN.VUNDO.B continued

I have attempted to use regedit and remove registry entries according to the Symantec Security Response instructions, I've attempted to use the removal tool from Symantec, I've turned off the sytem restore, disconnected my internet connection, booted using msconfig safe boot, I've attemted to use F8 safe boot, I've run hijackthis, procexp (but I can't suspend WINLOGON), killbox, and I feel like I've tried everything to delete this thing--several different combinations of attempts depending on what has worked for others according to my reading on other posts from Geeks to go and other websites, but nothing seems to work. I've noticed that imediately after I remove a registery item, if I hit the refresh (F5) it reappears. I verify the latest downloads every night and hope that something works, but I guess there is nothing easy about it, becaue no other post is identical to my situation, no update or removeal tool seems to work. I just ran adaware last night and deleted these 9 critical items listed above. I'm not sure that is a big deal, but the Trojan is very disturbing. I will wait for more instruction, but I'm ready to submit a hijackthis log.

I didn't mention above, but I've accomplished all the suggested software scans and spyware tools from the start here page, and I've verified that I had the latest windows upgrades. I have just renewed/upgraded my Norton's Anti virus & internet security...this week. And I've fixed, quarantined and deleted the 9 items from the Adaware scan. Thanks HEH

If your system is running a program which changes the hosts file or you have added listings to the hosts file then there is no need to check further. Otherwise, please download the "Host File Viewer" by Option^Explicit. It is a 65K program which will allow you to find/view/open/read/edit/restore to default settings your HOST file. Instructions are on the display screen of the program. Select the option to restore to default settings.

Symantec

McAfee

I have downloaded the "Host File Viewer" by Option^Explicit and restored the default host file. I ran TRENDMICRO and I got a congratulations, nothing found message. I'm not sure what progress we've made, but I still have the Trojan.VUNDO.B. What is my next step?

I think I'm done on here tonight, this post is just the next thing inline on the start here page. I have done everything on the page in order as well as what you have asked. Hopefully a HIJACKTHIS Log file is what you need. I'll check back late tomorrow evening. Thanks.

Sure would be nice to get rid of this virus alert ... It has been several days since I have ran any scans or fixes, I thought that I could use suggestions from this website, but so far I haven't had any luck. I'm losing faith in all these so-called virus protection tools, but I'll do all of them over again if it will get rid of the Trojan That I've found. Thanks

You must follow all of these instructions exactly otherwise it will not work.

*Please download Process Explorer by Systernals.
*Also download Killbox by Option^Explicit.

Unzip Process Explorer and double click on procexp.exe (If you receive an error message talking about symbols, just click OK and wait for Process Explorer to open)

In the top section of the Process Exlporer screen double click on winlogon.exe to bring up the winlogon.exe properties screen. Click on the Threads tab at the top.

Once you see this screen click on each instance of catip.dll once and then click the kill button.

After you have killed all of the catip.dll's under winlogon click OK.

Next double click on explorer.exe and, again, Click on the Threads tab at the top. Click once on each instance of catip.dll then click the kill button.

Once you have done that click OK again.

Next run HijackThis and place a check beside the following item and click FIX CHECKED:

O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {44240BB5-BD7D-4D49-A1AA-8AB0F3D3CB44} - C:\WINDOWS\repair\catip.dll

O20 - Winlogon Notify: catip - C:\WINDOWS\repair\catip.dll

Close HijackThis.

Open Notepad. Please copy EVERYTHING in the code box below and paste it into a new Notepad file. Change the "Save As Type" to "All Files" and save it as vundo.reg on your desktop. Make sure there is NO blank line above REGEDIT4:

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{44240BB5-BD7D-4D49-A1AA-8AB0F3D3CB44}]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\MSEvents.MSEvents]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\MSEvents.MSEvents.1]

Once you have saved it double click on vundo.reg and click YES when asked if you want to merge with the registry. Wait for the merged successfully prompt.

Double click on Killbox.exe and then check the delete on reboot button.

Enter the following filepath and filename into the Full path of file to delete box:

C:\WINDOWS\repair\catip.dll

Click the red circle with the white x and allow your computer to reboot.

After your computer has rebooted please run Hijackthis again and post a new HijackThis log.

I have downloaded both Killbox.exe and Process Explorer. I have opened Process explorer and double clicked Winlogon.exe and selected the threads tab, but I do not see any file names. There is a list that looks like this?

!CreateThread+0x27
!CreateThread+0x27
!CreateThread+0x27
!CreateThread+0x27
!CreateThread+0x27
!CreateThread+0x27
!CreateThread+0x27

Is there something that I'm missing?

Thanks again.

Did you unzip it before running it? If not, please do so.

Also is that ALL it has in that window?

Try it again, please.

Yes, I unzipped it, I tried again, but...I disconnected from the internet, disabled all norton, rebooted in safe mode and was able to use proc.exe, but I still can't see anything in winlogon.exe, but the !CreateThreadx0x27 list. I also saw 0x103d353 in that list.
I was able to see catip.dll in the explorer.exe threads and killed all of them. I used the regedit4 file and it appeared to work just fine, but when I went to use killbox, I got a message...PendingFileRenamingOperations Registry Data has been removed by an External Process! I rebooted normally and ran the HJT. I still have the virus alert and the catip.dll file.

I hope you don't get to disappointed I'll keep trying what ever you suggest, I may have done this before, but again I'll keep trying. Last week I edited the registry manually, but what I learned was that the HKEys that I deleted, would reappear almost as fast as I could close and reopen. If I deleted them and hit a refresh (F5) It was as if I hadn't done anything? Thanks again.

Reboot your computer, then follow all of my instructions again. This time when you use Killbox, (make sure the file path is input exactly as I have it without any spaces or anything), if you receive a PendingRenameOperations prompt, click NO and reboot your computer manually.

PendingFileRenamingOperations Registry Data has been removed by an External Process! All I can do is acknowledge it (ok) I get this message right after I say yes reboot...I see a message about some verifying registry...and then it quits. And displays the msg PendingFileRenamingOperations Registry Data has been removed by an External Process! All I can do is acknowledge the OK. It is as if I have said, never mind. I can start over, but Killbox will not delete the file. ??? I still can't see anything in WINLOGON.exe Threads.

I know it's hard, but you have to be patient as Vundo is becoming very difficult to remove. I needed you to try it again, because it rarely works like it's supposed to work the first time around...
