MAC iMovie Output Formats

Hi All

Some quick questions for the multimedia people.

I help out at my local church and they produce video clips using iMovie. The output files are in .avi format and then these are played via VLC on a Windows laptop hooked up to a projector.

Now my question is:

Is .avi the best format to output to? Or are there other better quality formats such as .mpg, .mov etc we can output to? Are there any disadvantages to outputting to .avi?
