My friend's laptop runs on Vista Business 32bit and is having problems with it. Helping him post to find a solution hope you guys can help! So here's the problem.

He starts up the laptop and he'd be alerted with a popup named "Windows Installer". And this continues everytime he does something on the laptop. So if he right clicks anything, "Windows Installer" would pop up asking him to install Symantec Antivirus. Everytime he double clicks and try to run a program or open a file, the "Windows Installer" would pop up too. But this happens only for the first time of an event. Say he right clicks on anything for the second time after starting up the computer from fresh, the "Windows Installer" doesn't prompt him again. But it still happens if he does something for the first time.

I'm not too sure if this is a malware or a software/driver problem. Hopefully there won't be a need for any logs but if there is, I can get back to you guys with it in a jiffy. So no problems on that.

Let me know if I can enrich you guys with any logs.

Thanks a bunch!

He doesn't have Norton. The antivirus he's running is Symantec Antivirus. Not the Norton Symantec. I'm pretty sure there's a difference.

But even if it's expired, it wouldn't keep activating the "Windows Installer" for no reason right?

Highly doubt its the core of the problem. He disabled it from the startup list and restarted the computer without it running at all. He still gets the problem. Unless it still secretly runs on the background, his test should have already proven that Norton isn't the problem.

I'll have him "activate" the error by right clicking and take note of the extra/new processes that comes up.

I had a similar problem with a computer using XP and Trend Micro recently.

I managed to solve it by manually downloading and installing the latest Windows Installer redistributable, then repairing the Trend Micro install, then finally repairing the Nero (yes, that's right - Nero) install and it was good as gold.

So it was Nero for me.

Cheers
