First a bit of background:

I bought a new HP la6030a in January of 2008. It came with Home Premium and all was on a 32bit rig. I installed an NVidea GeForce 8600 GT card. Other than that the mainboard a HP modded Asus Leonite came with an onboard 7:1 reealtek Audio System, a 1.8Ghz processor and was powered by a 300w fan. Practically from day one the machine had issues. white screening etc. I did a factory restore - same deal Windows explorer crashing all the time despit the fact I was running with 3Gb of DDR 2 667. The machine came with one and I had bouggt an extra 2Gb at the point of sale.

Dumbly I persevered hoping against hope that microsoft updates would fix the problems - They actually got worse. So I bought Ultimate 32bit and installed that. It was just as bad as Home premium in this sense... All the time apps were crashing.

I did a reformat and clean install of Ultimate and installed only the base antivirus/anti spyware programs (at that time kaspersky/spyware blaster and Advanced system care)and Office 2007. NO third party software at all and the error was immediately there again. So after a month of that I did another reformat and stuck XP back on. XP has issues too - right clicking for context menus hung windows explorer, but I somehow persevered with this until June of this year when XP just became too slow and bothersome. I uninstalled all apps that would register shell extensions, cleaned the reg and the issues were still there - maybe groove or something, who knows? so I reinstalled Win Zip etc as they obviously were not the culprits.

Anyhow I decided that the problem was most likely a slow processor so went out to look for a replacement. I couldn't find one that easily for this particular board so I ended up buying an Intel Q 8200 2.33 Ghz processor, a DP45TF motherboard and more recently a new case and also a DVD lightscribe unit - I smashed the one that came with the HP into little pieces - always skipped while watching DVD's etc - It was a Toshiba, I replaced it with a lightscribe that is much better in that regard. I añso bough Ultimate 64bit edition. I really thought I was set. Bulit the machine early one afternon last week, Instaled hardware updates, driver updates, firmware flashes etc on the newly installed 64bit system. I salvaged the memory from the HP and also the powersupply as I cannot afford to update either just at the moment. Anyhow almost straight away I am getting whitescreened all over the place. What is worse is that even running photoshop sometimes I get system is low on memory messages - WHAT THE F!!! ???? I am now runing AVG in place of Kaspersky as my sub ran out and have no money to renew even if the machine were working properly. I doubt very much that anti virus software is the cause of all these whitescreens having had 3 on different OS's and 3 different machines

- This machine has 3Gb - yes 3GB of ram installed. I am told that 1Gb is the minimum required to comfortably run Vista.

I have to say this much here.... 3 years ago I threw an Inspiron 8600 against the wall - a machine that was worth all told around Euro 3000 new (with some of the upgrades I did to it). I installed XP no less than 50 times on it in the period of 4 years. That weekend I bough a Mac. I have use it without any problem at all on 2Gb for almost 3 years now. The onlt issue it has or has ever had is a loose graphics chip - which I hope to get repaired very soon. I can run the adove suite on it with just 2Gb.

It really doesn't help to try single out a single program here I get thesw whitescreens all the time , regardless of what app I have running.

I have spent half of today yet again trying to google a fix for this issue) this machine was intended to be for my wife but as you can see is totally unusable. I am around 600$ worse off and still have not got a stable operating system that will allow one to do some work!

Who said windows was cheaper???? Bull!!!

On this 64bit build the following has happened now twice in the past few days.... after a series of these white screens, not responding messages the mouse gets weird too. If you try to click a desktop icon around 10 get selected. I rep´laces the mouse - same deal. Only solution was to reset!

My ps2 mouse which did work on installation now has it's controls reversed so I cannot use it. I tried using the intellipoint software to remap it but to no avail...

Frankly I am terrified by the prospect of Windows 7... and am wondsering if 98SE2 will run on this machine.

Has anyone else been through this Blizzard and somehow miraculously managed to fix the problem - aside that is from doing the best thing one can do under the circumstances, sell your windows rig to some other sucker and buy yourself a mac!

Would appreciate your input as I am anxious to give this machine back to my wife asap and retrieve my Mac!!!

I am truly paying the price yet again for investing in PC and Microsoft!

Need to get back to getting some work done and not playing geeksie every waking minute....

Hi,

Ok i need to ask some questions before i begin to make sure I haven't miss read anything.

So since buying the machine you have not replaced the following:
  • Hard drive
  • RAM
  • Graphics Card
  • Power Supply

You had 32Bit Vista Home Premium then you Bought Ultimate and then installed XP

Now the one link I can make between all of your machines and problems is you have used the same RAM throughout. If the problem exists on all the machines then here we could have a problem.

Also you still have the original 300W Power supply? and with that the NVidea 8600GT you installed?

So lets look at these different areas:

1, Please follow the guide:How to run Memtest.
Make sure you remove all but 1 stick or RAM on the machine and then report any errors the program came up with

2, Next I would ask that you maybe borrow another graphics card and see if that has any effect on the system. It's probable that it wont however we need to check and exhaust every avenue

3, Seeing as though you can boot into Windows which is always a positive,
  • Click Start, select Run
  • In the Run dialog box, type: dxdiag
  • Click Ok
  • You will then be presented with a dialogue window asking you to download new WHQL certificates from the Internet click Yes
  • Click the DirectX Files tab and report any errors it has found (they will be in the note section)
  • Click the Display tab and run the test. Any errors report them
  • Then Click Save All Information
  • Set the Save as type to Text File (*.txt)
  • Save the file DxDiag.txt to your Desktop so it is easy to find.
  • Close DxDiag
  • Open the file DxDiag.txt from your Desktop
  • Copy and paste the contents to your next reply.

If none of these test prove anything we can look at other options.

Also just to point out

- This machine has 3Gb - yes 3GB of ram installed. I am told that 1Gb is the minimum required to comfortably run Vista.

To run Vista 32 Bit you are actually required to have 2GB of RAM installed on your Machine. Vista 64Bit is actually more like 3GB. So with what you have most would say you have it the base line for 64Bit Vista.

Hi,

Ok i need to ask some questions before i begin to make sure I haven't miss read anything.

So since buying the machine you have not replaced the following:

  • Hard drive
  • RAM
  • Graphics Card
  • Power Supply

Hi Rev_Olie and thanks for getting back to me on this - when an issue has been ongoing this long two rational heards undoubtly are better than one.

Re this list... The Hard disc is actually relatively new. The one that shipped with the HP died about 6 months ago.... However before installing on the 64bit machine I made a complete secure re-format on it and ran disc diagnostics on it... Fresh as a daisy!

The Grapics card too is fine a 512 Gb NVidia Ge Force 8200 GT. I bought a board that did not come with onboard intel graphics - dont like intel cards, nor ATI for that matter.... NVidia is much more reliable for 3d Apps and Games

You are correct in saying the powe supply is not new - I explñained that and will replace as soon as I have the where_with_all.

As for the ram - it is the same ram used on the original 32 bit rig. Admittedly it has been in the back of my mind that this could be the culprit but largely on speed and quantity. As mentioned mine is of type DDR2 667mhz - I recently discovered there is also an 800mhz version, also suported by my board. I am toyig with the idea of buying2 x 2Gb of extra DDR2 667 and upgrading to 6GB of the slower... or else buying 2 x 2GB DDR2 800 and replacing the existing 3GB with 4GB of Faster ram... really don't know what would be a better option.

One thing I did not mention here though is that I have a secondary HD snstalled - also on Sata.

It may be a day or two before I come back to you on this but I plan to unhook the secondary as I have seen elsewhere that people have had issues with multiple drives - surely to God Vista supports them!!!!

In addition I have also been thinking along the lines of running a memtest so wil do that too before coming back to you!

Thanks again for your input - much appreciated!

ps: running XP SP3 or Vista 32 on the 3GB DDR2 667 was just as bad so I doubt the min Memory threshold has that much bearing on the issue. Hopefully we will have the answer before too long. 2 years of this is way too much....

Ok then i wont suggest anything else until you have run Memtest. I seriously think that memory is the culprit as there really isn't much else that could go wrong.

As for the ram - it is the same ram used on the original 32 bit rig. Admittedly it has been in the back of my mind that this could be the culprit but largely on speed and quantity. As mentioned mine is of type DDR2 667mhz - I recently discovered there is also an 800mhz version, also supported by my board. Just some things to point out.
When buying RAM you should always buy matched pairs. These are modules of RAM that are specific to each other and are know to work together. Using different speeds and types of RAM can reduce their effectiveness and can cause a multitude of errors.

If you are buying RAM either get more of the same slower DDR2 667MHz sticks OR get newer 800MHz sticks. Don't buy any however until you have run Memtest. There is no point in buying more RAM if you are going to install it with the existing possibly faulty RAM as that -im sure you are aware - would defeat the object as you wouldn't upgrade at all.

I would go if I was you with the faster 800MHz. You will benefit more with less of that than more of the other. Just make sure you have at least 3GB for 64Bit and 2GB for 32bit.

Il wait for your reply but if you reply and I don't after a couple of days please send me a message as im quite good at missing replies :)

Hi again.... I decided to do what I had in mind straight away... unhooked the secondary HD and ran he memtests as suggested. All 4 blocks passes with flying colours.... 110% on Test 8 before I quit in each case.

Relocated the chips and rebooted (still without the secondary HD). Straight away clicking on Quick launch I get the customary all white panel... Tried to lauch Vue... took 2 minutes or longer to load.(I avoid using photoshop as a test model as it is always slow)...

Then when I opened a saved scene I got not responding and white screening as usual... As mentioned I cannot single out vue here... virtually all apps do this , windowsexplorer and another one I discovered during the course of this exercise: windows desktop manager. So I decided here again that neither the secondary hard drive not the communication betwen it and the motherboard/memory were the culprits and decided to power down and reconnect my secondary. After around 8 minutes the machine had not shut down so I hit the power button.... must mention here that I did go in and try to get info on the application hang but the screen refreshes before I get the chance... I also get occasional 'popping' and all open windows are black before they refresh...

Reinstalled the drive rebooted and that is where I am now at.

Really I am now down to Ram (amount or speed???) - but even then there are many people with less seemingly running Vista be it 32bit or 64bit without these nightmares, to the power supply or the operating system itself....simply cannot thing of anything else to try. 2 years is a long time and as you can see I have been going about things by process of elimination - but all to no avail.

I did not mention but I have tried the other Video Card deal... It was actually the on board Intel card that initially gave problems on the HP before I went and bought the GeForce.... so again I am ruling out the Video Card and needless to say all my drivers are up to date etc.... I cannot think of anything beyond that..... other than MS updates which have plagued me a lot in the past - particularly on XP SP 2!!! That said I have had these issues with a skeletal install and possibly before I ever went near initial updates pre SP1....

My WEI btw is 4.8 so that certainly is not a bad rating....

where now I ask scratching the head????

Here's a new one I haven't had before....

Black hole on desktop. Tried refreshing and changing background picture etc... had to log off and back on again for it to go away!

Ok,

I think really we can say its a Power supply issue.

With the black screen happening there is something either not getting what it needs or is failing.
You dont ave bad RAM, ther are not DX issues I can see.

If you yourself say you have checked the Graphics card then there is unlikely to be an issue there.
The only other area there could be a lapse is we never knew whether the new processor and mobo worked entirely.

Give me a couple of days and let me figure some areas out. There really seems to be nothing left to try and power seems to be the only option.

I'll get back to you soon.

Thanks again m8, much appreciated. I must say it's definitely my favourite and has to be the lowest common denominator from what I can see. A friend on RedBubble also mentioned he bought a new dell a few years ago and from the off he had issues a bit similar. He put up with it for a month called a technician and they replaced the power supply. Can only hope.

Reminds me a lot of the Fiat Tipo I board in Beford in the late 80's - a lemon!!!! I have had a stabilizer and peak supressor hooked up to this machine since day one. So If it indeed the problem that will habe been a dud DVD rewriter and a faulty power supply. Not sure which is worse Dell or HP in theat respect. Never had issues with gateway when they were in Ireland and if I did they sent a technician around straight away and replaced the parts (my initial PC - day 1) If I get this one sorted and have a stable and trouble free environment then from now on I'll build my own rigs. As mentioned this machine is pretty much all new but the power unit for now is borrowed from the HP.

Let me know if you have any more thoughts. Wont be in the position to replace the unit till later this month, so will have to wait in any event!

Hi Joe,

Sorry it took a while to get back to you. I've been talking with a few different people on a few forums and the initial always comes back to either a faulty install or PSU if its going to be hardware.

Now a couple have suggested that you maybe try another reinstall. The line that came up is that when you had the problem it was to do with hardware. When the hardware was replaced the initial problem was fixed but then when Windows was installed something failed. Hopefully that makes a bit of sense.

So if you are in a position just os i can report back maybe try a reinstall of Windows. If you feel its not worth it that's fine but it would be something esle out the way.
Also when you do reinstall make sure you remove the old partition and create a new one for use.

Hi Rev...

Sorry for the delay in getting back.

Bought a 550W HEC WIn Pro PS last week. Lovely lookin thing and nice performance figures. Installed it but ... Nah!!! Nothing doin!

Problem persists.

I downloaded a tool or two to run on the Graphics Card

an XFX NVidea 512 Ge Force 8200

Namely a Virtual Memory Stress test tool called VMT and an EVGA precision tool which looks like a utility ofr overclocking which I know nought about so decided to leave well enough alone for now! I ran the VMT tool. But again this is an area I know nothing about... It ran fine, error free in fact up to Ones - pattern#0 test 39 of 254 and then all [bleep] brokke loose. Clocked up a couple of million errors in a matter of seconds and just hung. Was running the test seemingly on dX. Again not sure what to make of this.

I know have a dilemma...

For testing purposes I thought about whipping out the 64bit OS installed HD from this machine (The Quad) and trying to run it on the HP Duo using the Intel on board Graphics Card but the Duo doesnt recognise the OS´.

The new board - Quatro does not include an onboard and I have no other nor access to another Card with which to troubleshoot... Veritably knackered in other words.

Reluctantly it looks like I am going to have to shift my files onto the partition, reformat the C (again) Install a 32 bit OS (most likely XP), bung the HD onto the HP again (until such time as I can afford another Graphics card fror the Quad which could be a long way off) and try running it with the intel card again. However I am certain that it was because of these problems that I bought the Ge Force to begin with. I have always stuck by NVidea cards since the riva chip days, never had a problem. According to the bumf on the side of the box this card should be well able to handle Vista.

I am so out of options and cash now I really don´t know anymore.... Tried them all! This card looks fine on the face of it and I am not sure how it can cause some of the behaviours I have been witnessing but I could be wrong I guess....

Going to be a busy few days I think....

Hi Joe,

Sorry to hear your problem still exists, looks like we got it wrong after all :)

Now unfortunatley with you buying the card in January 08 you may still be in luck. With it being XFX they have I think a 2 year warranty or possibly a lifetime warranty.
If i was you before you start tampering just check with them if you are entitled to anything. Not sure what they will say but you never know.

The only other area i am now concerned with is that with the motherboard. Have you use more than 1 graphics card thats gone wrong? I've got a bit mixed up with all of your hardware changes im not sure there :)

Hi Again Olli.

The latest update in this sage:

I am currently reinstalling the os for the second time in as many days. I rebuilt the Hp with the components it shipped with and installed 32bit Vista on it. WIthin hours I completely lost pacience with it. As expected the issues I am having are still there. ... That means I have tried everything now... two entirely different set ups... Apart from that I had big problems with windows updates failing... I eventually got SP2 installed but shortly after that had other issues.

So again I rebuilt the new system and installed 64 bit on it. I am still installing software etc and had a free run - This was the nearest I got to clean Vista in 2 years until I downloaded some windows updates last night. I was able to click on custom toolbars I set up in the task bar (this also has become the litmus paper test) and the menus appeared almost seemlessly. Not perfect but better than they have done. However after restating following windows updates... These are the 50 or so updates installed on top of SP1 but prior to IE8 the problems are back again. I click on the arrows beside the task bar, get the customary white box and have to wait 10 seconds and often more before the menus appear.

Once again the problems I have had most likely have been caused by... well Micro$oft. Surprise, Surprise. That SP2 issue I had on the 32 bit system.... I scoured the net for solutions to that and tried something like 20 ifferent suggestions there from Microsoft engineers.... None of them worked. Again, no surprises here. Ultimately I found a solution which I believe was independently written. you delette tha Vlite Key in HKLM, disable services and startup items, restart and then it lets you install.

Only it seems with Microsoft do they provide solutions for which you need other solutions in order to apply them. I received a present of snow leopard at the weekend for my mac. By contrast it installed very quickly, Automatically saved all my files. Has some breathtaking new features and even on a now relatively slow mac performance is amazing. WIndows open and close almost as fast as they did on a Mac Pro running Leopard. Start up and Shut down times are much quicker, and were already way faster than windows. In terms of an OS Apple are streets ahead of Microsofr. I do need to get my graphics chip fixed on it though!

Thik my best solution here would be to possibly try and sell off bot PCs for parts.. buy a new Mac and get the graphics chip on the one I already have repaired and let my wife use that.

Having had 4 years of utter misery running XP pro on a Dell Inspiron 8600 (had to do a re-format and intsall just about every month. I clocked up 50 + reinstalls in the 4 years I had it)I swore never again would I buy Microsoft, particularly Vista. And definitely never HP. However my wife was used to Windows so I bought it for her foolishly thinking that if Vista was terrible or I didn[t like the HP I could customise either or both... How totally wrong I was there.

Windows updates in the past, particularly on SP2 for XP have rendered my pc[s practically unusable. Now I find that updates are having exactly the same misery/nflicting effects on Vista.

Ultimately I will rebouid the HP again and hike it off to a friend of mine who is an engineer and ask them to test drive it.... without giving any details than -it-s playing up- and see what they have to say. I might add to disable updates until they have security, office, Win Rar and Win Zip and possibly photoshop installed. Get them to test in asimilar environment to the one I have been operating in... then run the updates to IE8... and see what they come back with! I have eliminated just about every avenue here. Suffered considerable expense in the process but I am quite certain I have now found the cause of the problem! Micro$oft should start paying people to use their software. Maybe a few more fines would sort them out!

Well Joe I'm stumped :)

You have changed every bit of hardware and you have been able to build probably 2 PC's out of the stuff you have now.

We have checked each bit of hardware and its all been swapped and replaced but still the problem persists. My only concern for you is that you have replaced a bit of hardware that was dead to begin with with a bit of hardware that was also dead, respectively replacing broken with broken, which is why its not working...but to do that you would have to be very very unlucky.

I really don't know what to suggest. At the moment I would turn to drivers services etc but you have done so many reinstalls that there is no point in trying. Is there anything at all you haven't yet replaced? Anything at all except of course the case.

The only other area i could think was a monitor...but that wouldn't solve the slow boot times/loading times. Just as an extra check you could always install Linux- ubuntu for example and see if there are problems there. If not then we know there is something incorrect about your PC and Windows...but apart form they I'm really stuck :)
