I'd been using a Netgear DG834 wired router. A month ago I bought new filters and a new Netgear DG834GT wireless router, which made no difference. I'd noticed intermittent noise on the phone line; even with just the phone connected to the test socket, there was hissing and crackling on 10-15% of BT quiet line tests (using different phones). A BT engineer replaced the exterior telephone wire from the socket to the telegraph pole.
There was still noise on the line and internet speeds were still low. Finally my ISP arranged for BT to send a broadband engineer on Aug 07. He fitted a new BT socket, (phone socket & ADSL socket with a filter). The BT engineer said his BT colleague on the phone had raised my IP Profile upto 4500 to test the speed). According to his colleague and my ISP provider, there was no problem with my internet connection; the BT engineer said that my 1 month old Netgear DG834GT router was faulty. He didn't have his own router to make a test (which he said was BT policy - where's the logic in that?!).
The internet speed has dropped since then; my IP Profile dropped from 4500 kbps on Aug 07 to 750 kbps on Aug 09 (today). My downstream connection has varied from 500 kbps upto as high as 8120 kbps on Aug 07, but my actual IP throughput has been terrible (often around 15 kbps). Even since Aug 07 I keep having to reboot my rooter about 10 times a day (from a weak signal or faulty hardware?). Please look at the screenshots to see if they can show what is wrong.
Unfortunately I don't have another PC or laptop.
