I applied the latest security updates to Vista (8/12/09) and an optional Realtek update. After the restart of the system to complete the update process I no longer had lan communications (unplugged cable message). I tested the link via another computer and the wiring, router, etc. functions properly. I do have wireless comm on the machine still functional. I backed off the security updates and re-installed the Realtek adapter and latest driver (from Realtek) but nothing has restored the device functionality. Vista maintains the device is working properly, however the dianostics indicate the cable is unplugged (which it is not). I find the coincidence to hard to believe that the device "broke" on the restart of a Vista Security update. Any guidance would be appreciated.
