Hi ebbo ...welcome to Geeks To Go... :)
first... can you tell me why your trying to renew your IP address...
what problems are you having...
we may be able to help BUT you need to explain in more detail exactly what is happening...

tell us everything you tried to fix the problem and what the results were...

did you add any new hardware or software recently...
get any updates for xp or any software just prior to the problem...
what is the make and model of your computer...
what are your system specs...
have you tried system restore yet...
if not...go back at least a week before you started having problems...

I can't get connected to the internet and when I try it says needs to assign network address and then when I click on repair it says needs to renew IP address. So I go to start windows click on run then type in cmd and then I type ipconfig/renew. Then an error message comes up and says rpc server unavailable. I've tried registry scan. But didn't change anything. I have not tried recovery.

how are are you connected...
to a router or directly to a modem
wired or wireless...
Lets try and see whether you have equipment related problems. In this step, we will allow the equipment to self-diagnose and resolve the problems.

Save all your current work, close all open applications, then shut down your computer ...unplug router and modem

Power up the modem first and after it gets initialized and all the lites are steady..(takes a few minutes)
power up the router...after all the lites are on...(takes a few minutes)
power up the computer

The above steps should take care of your problem

no joy then try this..

TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows XP with SP2.

For these commands click on Start... Run...type in...CMD ...press enter....to open a command prompt box

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults...type in ... netsh winsock reset catalog .... press ...enter

Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults...type in...... netsh int ip reset reset.log ... press ...enter

reread my last post...I added to it...
if that does not help...try connecting to the modem directly with a CAT5E or a CAT6 cable

have you ever been connected to the internet with the same modem and computer you are using...
if so try system restore...go here for the how to...
Every time you download or install a new game, application, or software update, you make changes to your computer. Sometimes that change may make your system unstable. Have you ever wanted to go back to the way it was? With System Restore, you can.

System Restore works a lot like the Undo command in Microsoft Word. You can use System Restore to remove any system changes that were made since the last time you remember your computer working correctly. System Restore does not affect your personal data files

my computer shut down by it self and restarted it self. when I tried to access the Internet it comes up with: RPC log in error. I have looked at the suggestions and I have gone into services and tried to double click RPC but nothing happens. I then right clicked the mouse and clicked on option to start and it comes up with error: COULD NOT START THE RPC LOCATOR SERVICE ON LOKAL COMPUTER ERROR 1068:THE DEPENDANCY SERVICE OR GROUP FAILED TO START Does anyone have suggestions on how to fix this problem?
