A quick question.
Does formatting the hard drive clear the registry??

You betcha! You'll lose all data and files so backup what you want to keep. Make sure you have a good install CD as you will have to re-install your version of Windows. If your install CD is just an upgrade, then you will have to install the version of Windows which is a full install before upgrading.
