Now that I have backed everything up, I went to the website and I see a potential problem!
I do not have the Vista CD as it came already installed on this computer when I bought it (brand new).
Is this a huge problem? Little problem?

Brand name system?
What make and model?
It is possible there is a Recovery Partition already on your system and recovery may still be possible from there.

Press the power button to start the HP. Press and hold the F11 key to launch the HP Recovery Manager from the recovery partition.

I started to do the System Recovery, however the earliest start pint they have listed is the end of January. I've had this problem for quite a few months now, just have neglected it.
What do you suggest?
Thanks so much for your help!

Well this is not good. You should have more restore points then just last month.
Did you format the system or recover it before?

Well that makes it even more interesting as why you have no restore points then.
What anti virus programs do you use and is it up to date with its virus definitions?
With not being able to install or uninstall, no restore points available after 2 years... I'm beginning to wonder if you may have a active infection causing all your problems.

No AV is going to protect you 100% as there are just to many new virus's everyday.
I suggest you go to the Malware Removal and Spyware Removal Forum and run all the steps located in the
START HERE. These self-help tools will help you clean up 70% of problems on your own.
If you are still having problems after doing the steps, then please post the reguested logs in THAT forum.
If you are unable to run any of the tools then start a new topic in the malware forum and put this in the subject line...I am unable to run any malware tools

If you are still having problems after being given a clean bill of health from the malware expert, then please return to THIS thread and we will pursue other options to help you solve your current problem(s).

I have been posting at that site a few times, scans were all clear so I went to the next step but the rootkit scan crashes my computer. Unfortunately I'm not receiving any replies.

Post a new topic in the Waiting Room with a link to your Malware topic and the original day you posted it. This will get you help faster since they are busy and you may have been overlooked.

If you have more than one RAM module installed, try starting computer with one RAM stick at a time.

NOTE Keep in mind, the manual check listed above is always superior to the software check, listed below. DO NOT proceed with memtest, if you can go with option A

B. If you have only one RAM stick installed...
...run memtest...

1. Download - Pre-Compiled Bootable ISO (.zip)
2. Unzip downloaded memtest86+-2.11.iso.zip file.
3. Inside, you'll find memtest86+-2.11.iso file.
4. Download, and install ImgBurn: http://www.imgburn.com/
5. Insert blank CD into your CD drive.
6. Open ImgBurn, and click on Write image file to disc
7. Click on Browse for a file... icon:

8. Locate memtest86+-2.11.iso file, and click Open button.
9. Click on ImgBurn green arrow to start burning bootable memtest86 CD:

10. Once the CD is created, boot from it, and memtest will automatically start to run. You may have to change the boot sequence in your BIOS to make it work right.

To change Boot Sequence in your BIOS
Reboot the system and at the first post screen (where it is counting up memory) start tapping the DEL button
This will enter you into the Bios\Cmos area.
Find the Advanced area and click Enter
Look for Boot Sequence or Boot Options and highlight that click Enter
Now highlight the first drive and follow the directions on the bottom of the screen on how to modify it and change it to CDrom.
Change the second drive to the C or Main Drive
Once that is done then click F10 to Save and Exit
You will prompted to enter Y to verify Save and Exit. Click Y and the system will now reboot with the new settings.

The running program will look something like this depending on the size and number of ram modules installed:

It's recommended to run 5-6 passes. Each pass contains very same 8 tests.

This will show the progress of the test. It can take a while. Be patient, or leave it running overnight.

The most important item here is the “errors” line. If you see ANY errors, even one, most likely, you have bad RAM.
