Also the friend claims to be in Italy while the nasty email person claims to be in Ireland, is that even possible if the IP addresses are the same? Any advice here is welcome folks

How are you verifying that the originating IP addresses match?

Thanks for replying Johanna, well in hotmail if you rightclick on the email (before actually clicking into it to read) a drop down menu appears and if you click "view source" it tells you a lot of information including the originating IP address

The IPs can be forged OR in some cases every email sent through a provider gets tagged the same IP address.
If in doubt, just delete the nasty email and forget about it.
