I wasn't sure which forum to ask this question in so I put it here. Sorry if it's in the wrong place.

I have Windows Vista Ultimate that as most know comes with the Complete PC backup & Restore Utility. I have a 500GB My Book Essential USB External HDD that is currenlty formatted in FAT32. I would like to reformat to NTFS and use this as my back up source.

My question is, If I reformat my external HDD and then use it to do a complete pc backup will I be able to use it do a functional restore of my internal HDD?

And...

If my current HDD fails and needs to be replaced will I be able to use the complete pc restore backup on my external HDD to install the OS onto the new internal HDD?

Ihave had an internal HDD fail before and I do not want to have to go through all of that drama again!!

If Vista's backup won't malfunction for some reason, then "yes" to both questions.

Nice manual here: http://www.bleepingc...utorial145.html

Sorry it has been so long but I just wanted to thank you for your help. Luckily I have not had to use this feature so I cant really say if it would work. I hope I don't ever have to use it either.

But I do have my pictures and important documents backed up to other sources just incase the backup & restore feature doesn't work like it's supposed to.
