hey everyone i hope someone can help me.

first off i am not using the laptop that is totally messed up. im using my other laptop.

this laptop that is all screwed up is a gateway with windows vista. i cant open anything. when i try to open anything such as a file or a program a black window comes up and says " program too large for memory" or something along those lines. i know it has a virus or a worm or something like that i just dont have the money to get rid of them by buying an antivirus program. so i just want to go ahead and do a system recovery. so i have the program on my laptom alread. so i go to gateway system recovery center and click on system recovery it says in order to go through with system recovery it has to restart my laptop and has option yes or no and i click the yes option and then click the restart button and wait and wait and wait and nothing happens. all i want is for my laptop to work normally without acting up. also when i start up my laptop like 20 windows pop up if this helps any. if anymore information is needed i will GLADLY give u the info.

someone help!

This laptop has Vista correct?

If your sure you don't want the Malware Forum to fix up your computer, and just want to go ahead with the complete reinstall, follow these steps.

To reinstall Windows Vista

Back up your files before you begin reinstalling Windows, even if you're reinstalling Windows on a hard disk partition. A clean installation replaces the current version of Windows and all personal files.
  • Turn on your computer and insert the Windows Vista DVD or CD.
  • On the Install Windows page, follow any instructions that might appear, and then click Install now.
  • On the Get important updates for installation page, we recommend getting the latest updates to help ensure a successful installation and to help protect your computer against security threats. You will need an Internet connection to get installation updates.
  • On the Type your product key for activation page, we strongly recommend that you type your 25-character product key to help avoid problems during activation.
  • On the Please read the license terms page, if you accept the license terms, click I accept the license terms.
  • Follow the instructions on each page. On the Which type of installation do you want? page, click Custom.
  • On the Where do you want to install Windows? page, select the partition where you want to install Windows.
  • Click Next to begin the installation. You might see a compatibility report.
  • Follow the instructions.
  • Be sure to enable existing, or install new, antivirus software, a firewall, and whatever else you need to keep your computer safe, after the installation is complete. Some great free programs are listed in this topic.

Oops, sorry, I thought you had said reinstall :)

Alot of Antivirus programs are free first of all, go to the link I suggested in the previous post.

I would go to the Malware Forum if I were you. As it is possible that your system restore points have been infected with malware, system recovery might not be an option right now.

Please go to the Malware Forum and read the stickies located at the top, especially this one.
The guides will give you several steps that will help you clean up 70 percent of all problems by yourself. Then you can post a OTL log in THAT forum. Be patient, the Malware Forum is a very busy place and a two or three day wait is not unusual. Only after a three day wait may you move to The Waiting Room where you will be on the top of the list to be helped. A three day wait is 72 hours.. Make sure it has been over that amount of time, or your Waiting Room topic will be closed.

If you are still having problems after getting a clean bill of health from the malware expert, please return to this thread.

-Jason :)

P.S. Sorry about the confusion!

well i downloaded the programs and put them on a flash drive and tried to run them on the screwed up pc and nothing will run on my computer. as i descipted in my post. when i try to run anything at all such as a simple word file or a program, 20 black windows pop up and say program too large for memory or something like that. and there are no system restore points for me to restore to so i cant do that. is there anyway i can just wipe my lapop clean without losing my OS.

Hey,

Alright, if your fine with wiping it all completely, you can follow my first "mistaken" post. You will need your Windows Vista CD, and some patience. This will, mind you, wipe EVERYTHING off your hard drive, so be sure to back up anything you need kept onto a flash drive or other form.

If you have trouble booting your CD, or any other problems, I'll help you the best I can.
