will only start from boot/recovery disc

I have a Gateway450ROG laptop I got on Ebay worked great as soon as it arrived. As soon as I got it I installed Avira free anti-virus. After a few months it just would not start, acts like it is going to then get error message that OS is not found and no hard drive connected. Get same messages if I try to boot from XP disc. The only way it will start is with a boot disc I bought from "recovery-cds.com" but now what do I do to reload XP. Where do I start? No geek friends and no Money to get help, appreciate any help thanks, cc3d
