I dl'd a program from Limewire (yeah yeah I know save the lecture lol) I lost my desktop icons, toolbar at the bottom, I can NOT access control panel, or start up menu, The only thing I can access is my task manager.

Before I lost all of this I was trying to do a search in yahoo and it kept taking me out of yahoo and to all these assorted search pages. Thats what prompted me to look in the task manager and I saw msa.exe running so I stopped it.

I then looked in the start up menu and saw alot of programs listed that I didn't recognize so I unchecked them.

I rebooted and came back with no desktop icons, toolbar or startup menu.

I also can not access my safe mode as when I try by hitting f10 it takes me into the HP recovery program. I tried F8 and nothing happens.

I also can not access any of my system folders it tells me I don't have permission.

I also can not save anything to my CD drive to preserve my photos etc.

I have AVG that seem's to have seen the c.exe but the box flicked off before I could tell if it did anything with it.

I don't have alot of money to buy all these programs that boost being able to remove the virus and not work. none of them talk about restoring my desktop and tool bar.

Also I tried to go into restore my computer at an earlier date but there isn't any dates in there

Also my IE browser seems to have disappeared from my desktop via taskmanager and I see no IE in the taskmanager now.

This is being typed on my hubbys computer.

Now what?

Have you tried last known good configuration will get you into Windows.

1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
4) Select Last Known Good Configuration and proceed.

If you can get in that way do this:

Download Combofix from either of the links below. You must rename it before saving it. Save it to your desktop.

Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools.

Double click on Combo-Fix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt for review.
If you can't make that work come back and tell me. Also tell me what machine you are running.
