when booted it says windows failed to start
file: \windows\system32\config\system

info: failed to load because system file registry is missing or corrupt

Wait how did you run a windows based memory diagnostics if you can't get into windows?
Did your friend get recovery disks for the system or did he make the recovery disks when he first got the system?

Well the bad news is that Vista doesn't have the Repair Option like XP does so that is going to be out of the question to do a repair installation.
I take it being a year old there is no warranty on the system?
How about data files that may needed to be saved?

As long as the HD is in working order we can use a linux live cd to backup the data.
This would allow us to format and reinstall system back to factory settings.

Great then we can proceed.
Now I must correct a previous post somewhat.
There is no repair option in Vista but there is a in place upgrade option which will do much of the same as the XP upgrade option.
My personal opinion is that a format and fresh install would be better. This way she will have a fully functional system.
Now on the bottom of the laptop there should be a sticker that shows the original OS loaded and a reg key. Is that there and what does it say?

I don't need the reg key. that is private info.
As long as the type on the sticker matches the disk you have then you are ready to go. At this point it is a format and fresh install time.
The steps should be about the same as XP so I am going to include those.

Go HERE for step by step instructions on how to partition, format, and install XP fresh
