Without the cd there is no way to repair or format. The cd is the important part. Can you borrow a cd of the same type that is installed on the system?
Vista Home Edition in your case.

Let's see if there is a recovery partition on the hard drive.

Reboot the system and start tapping the F10 key to get to the Recovery partition
If that doesn't work then reboot and try holding the Fn key and then tapping the F10 key.

Once you get to that let me know what options you have displayed.
Since there is no data of importance I would say do a full restore or a destructive recovery depending on how it is worded.

Well we are at a point where the options have narrowed down.
If the F10 key didn't work try F12
If that doesn't work then we are at a point where a format and install are needed.
We need the original disks or the other option is to contact Acer and have your friend purchase a new Recovery disk from them. :)

Well since no data is needed it is not worth the time to organize.
We will just get rid of it when you get the recovery disk anyway.
