The BSOD screen can be paused if you do the following:

1. Hold the Windows key and press Pause/Break. The System Properties dialog box should appear.
2. Click the Advanced tab.
3. Underneath Startup and Recovery, click the Settings button.
4. Underneath System Failure, uncheck Automatically restart.

Meanwhile, let's troubleshoot your crash:

1. Click the Start Menu, and in the Start Search box, type %SystemRoot%\Minidump and press ENTER.
2. Zip and attach the last few .dmp files to your next post so that I can analyze them for you.

Hey there Klaus,

Well, this is certainly a tricky one. It points to a driver problem, but I think I'd start, as usual, by testing the RAM. (If you don't rule out RAM problems early, it can make you pull your hair out when dealing with these issues. :))

1. Reboot and enter the Advanced Boot Options menu by repeatedly pressing F8.
2. Once in the menu, do you see a Repair Your Computer item on the list? If so, select it. If not, skip this list and go to the alternate method below.
3. Select a keyboard layout, and then click Next.
4. Select a user name and enter the password, and then click OK.
5. On the System Recovery Options menu, click Windows Memory Diagnostic.

If Repair Your Computer is not listed, you will need your original Windows Vista installation CD.

1. Insert the Vista CD and reboot.
2. If prompted, press any key to start Windows from the installation disc.
3. Choose your language settings, and then click Next.
4. Click Repair your computer.
5. Select the operating system you want to repair, and then click Next.
6. On the System Recovery Options menu, click Windows Memory Diagnostic.

Let it run and when it's done, your system will reboot and you will be notified of the results via a popup in the lower-right hand corner of the screen. At least once this is done we can rule out any possible memory issues.

Please let me know the results.

Hey Klaus,

What programs are currently installed for security/antivirus and firewall protection?

I have AVG free, malwarebytes and ad-aware.
And just the standard windows firewall which i currently have off, to see if that helped.

The only real-time scanner configured among those is AVG, correct? As in, the other two are simply set up for on-demand only?

Hey Klaus,

In the interest of troubleshooting, I think it might be a good idea to remove Ad-Aware temporarily. I'm not familiar with the new version of the program, but if it features a resident shield as you've said, it's possible that it could interfere with AVG's. Many of these odd Vista driver issues can be attributed to programs that hook deeply into the OS competing with each other... most often, real-time virus scanners. If removing Ad-aware does not correct the problem you can always simply reinstall it, of course.

If that gives you no satisfaction, the next definite step I would recommend is a full hard drive scan. Typically these sporadic problems pointing to ntkrnlmp.exe actually are a product of some sort of memory-access issue, and, of course, the three major components of such problems are faulty RAM, faulty hard drive, and deep-seated programs which hook file access.

I would perform a scan with the manufacturer's tools, which in your case would be either Western Digital (Data Lifeguard Tools), Maxtor (SeaTools), or Samsung (ES Tool), depending on which drive currently houses your Windows installation and system files. If your swap/page file is located on a different disk by some chance, you should scan that one as well.

I hope this helps. It certainly seems to be the most logical next step.

Okay, here's a win32k.sys one now also.

Since we're receiving conflicting reports from the bugchecks, I would say it's almost certain that one of four things would be causing this:

1. RAM faults
2. Hard drive faults
3. Two real-time scanners or firewalls of some sort running simultaneously
4. Malware

Since we've all but ruled out the first two, we ought to focus quite intensely on the possibility of either of the last two.

A. You said you are using the standard Windows firewall, which is fine. You don't still have a third-party firewall installed but turned off by any chance, right?

As for #4, it's highly unlikely on W7 64-bit, especially if you are running with UAC enabled. But it's still worth consideration just in case. I unfortunately cannot help you with any of it here as it is not allowed per forum rules.

B. However, let's investigate just one more thing as well. Please try disabling User Account Control if it is enabled and reboot. See if the error persists afterward.

Please report back with the results of A and B.

Thanks, and I hope we can sort this out!

(In case you are wondering, I believe our next step will be a chkdsk /r command from within the recovery console)
