Hi.

Im having a problem with my windows updater.
I click install the updates it installs but after about 5-10minutes it will come back as the same update.

Ive downloaded the modifcation for the update and it still says.

Is there a way to fix this? Been like this for over 1-2weeks.

Thanks.

Hey there ashyo,

Although we can check the log to discover which update is causing the issue, do you happen to recall which one it is?

Before we troubleshoot anything beyond that anyway, let's take the following steps.

First, let's flush the update cache:

1. Open Command Prompt by clicking Start > All Programs > Accessories > Right-Click Command Prompt and choose Run as Administrator.
2. At the Command Prompt, type net stop wuauserv
3. Then type cd /d %windir%
4. Type rd /s SoftwareDistribution
5. Type net start wuauserv

After you finish these steps, before you attempt the update again, please reply and let me know the results of the above procedure.

Also, please attach a copy of the log file located at %windir%\Windowsupdate.log to your reply.

Thanks, :)

~os

1 problem

C:\Windows>net start wuauserver
'net' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
operable program or batch file.

Hey ashyo,

That's uncommon.

Let's do:

1. Click Start > in the Start Search box, type cmd and press ENTER.
2. Type path in the opened window and press ENTER.
3. Right-click the window and choose Select All.
4. Press CTRL+C to copy the text.
5. Please paste it in a reply here.

Thanks!

Hey ashyo,

Please do the following:

1. Click Start > RIGHT-click Computer and choose Properties
2. Click Advanced system settings on the left
3. Click Environment Variables...
4. In the System variables box, scroll down until you find Path.
5. Double-click that entry and delete the text in the variable value box.
6. Replace the text with the following:
%SystemRoot%\system32;%SystemRoot%;%SystemRoot%\System32\Wbem;C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.0_07\bin;C:\Program Files\QuickTime\QTSystem\;C:\sun\SDK\bin
7. Click OK on all three open windows.

Next, repeat these steps to flush the update cache:

1. Open Command Prompt by clicking Start > All Programs > Accessories > Right-Click Command Prompt and choose Run as Administrator.
2. At the Command Prompt, type net stop wuauserv
3. Then type cd /d %windir%
4. Type rd /s SoftwareDistribution
5. Type net start wuauserv

Please let me know if it works. Also, please attach a copy of the log file located at %windir%\Windowsupdate.log to your reply.

Thanks,

That's okay if it isn't fixed yet; we have to walk through the troubleshooting step by step to determine the problem.

Could you please provide the log I asked for?

C:\Windows\system32>%windir%/windowsupdate.log

The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.

C:\Windows\system32>

Hey ashyo,

Don't bother using that command at the cmd prompt; instead, simply close that window for now, click to post a reply in this thread, and then attach the file from the Browse... window.

Thanks,

~os

ashyo,

Since the update cache has since been cleared and the issue has not been resolved, that will be our next step.

Please proceed here to download the standalone package and run/install it.

Afterwards, if you still receive notification to update automatically, try rebooting. If it still persists after that, you can right-click the update to Hide it. But at that point, more troubleshooting will be necessary to ensure your Windows Update client functions properly going forward.

It would still be helpful if you would provide your log file, but all I can do is ask.

Hey ashyo,

Now we will definitely need that log I referenced to proceed.

1. Click Add Reply to reply to this post.
2. Click Browse... and navigate to %windir% in the Browse... dialog that appears
3. Choose the Windowsupdate.log file and attach it to your next post.
