used the boot discs for xp install and then got response that cd was corrupted and could not load. I then tried to reload win98 and cannot get dos mode to come up.

First which OS are you wanting to install?
XP does not use DOS
Is the XP disk a Genuine, copy or a download?
What about the 98 is it a cd or floppy disk's? Is it a Genuine, burned or downloaded copy?

For Windows 98, you will need a boot floppy disk to get the install started. Oh the joys, I really don't miss those days.
