Actually I believe it is Start and then Search
If you can do it try the following steps and lets check the system...

Click Start, then Run (Search In Vista)
Type cmd, and click Ok
At the prompt in the command window that opens, type fsutil dirty query ?: and press Enter (Where ? is the letter of the drive to queried)

Does the result of this indicate the drive is "Dirty"?

I didn't get a chance to get to the computer last night. I will as soon as possible. Just didn't want you to think I was ignoring your advice. I should be able to do it tomorrow.

Then that is not the issue at this point. Since it is not happening on every boot then it would indicate a OS problem or a HD problem. Since the HD diagnostics didn't work or find anything then we need to look at another option.

You will have to Perform a Repair Installation For Vista...guide is HERE...
This will allow you to repair your Win 7 installation and keep all of your personal user account files, settings, and programs

Ok, I've done the repair installation as requested. Now do I just monitor it to see if it runs the Check disk again?

Yep and let me know. It should only do check disk if you schedule it or if the system is shutdown wrong.

Let me know if it does or it doesn't. If the fix resolved it then anyone else reading this can save themselves some time from our hard work. :) :) :)

I don't know if you're still reading this thread, but all of the sudden this weekend the computer did two disk checks again.
