HP Compaq nx9420 won't boot

HP Compaq nx9420 laptop.
XP Professional
Intel Core 2 Duo 2 Ghz
2 GB ram

cannot boot with slax linux. Kernel panic- not syncing: attempted to kill init! knoppix and systemrescuecd crash too.

cannot boot Hiren disc in DOS or miniXP mode.

Cannot boot in safe mode. hangs at hpdskflt.sys

pulled hard drive and connected to other machine. files are visible in linux. windows shows hard drive connected but will not access drive or show properties. unable to run chkdsk.

can only get to bios. Memory tester in bios showed a test pass... can't run boot disk to use memtest86. bios had option to test hard drive. it failed a low-level read test.

won't boot cd's or usb with hard drive removed... it must be some sort of hardware issue.

any ideas. is the motherboard toast?
