I have a Acer Aspire 5738z it comes with vista home.
I installed windows 7 pro on the laptop.
There are a few things missing :)
1. The CD is not listed when you open my computer or with the device manager. If you insert a disk it then comes back to exist. I lent it to someone and he gave it back because he said that the CD does not work. I have not found an answer to why this happens though I think it is to "save" the batt is there a way to change it? (Also the WiFi does not exist in the device manager when turned off. when turned on it installs it)

2. The keypad has special features if you use 2 fingers in different ways sort of like the mac but in windows 7 the tweaks don't work. It is installed correctly and I have downloaded the latest driver on the net.

Thanx

One of these may help with the cd drive problem:
1. Uninstall the drive through Device Manager.
Restart computer. The drive will be automatically reinstalled.
or...
2. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060
Restart computer.
or...
3. Download, and run Restore Missing CD Drive patch
Double click on cdgone.zip to unzip it.
Right click on cdgone.reg, click Merge.
Accept registry merge.
Restart computer.
or...
4. Go to Device Manager, click a "+" sign next to IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers.
You'll see two items:
- ATA Channel0 (or Primary Channel)
- ATA Channel1 (or Secondary Channel)
Right click on each of them, and click Uninstall. Confirm.
Restart Windows. They'll be automatically reinstalled.

Thank's to Broni for the instructions

I tried 3 and 4 and it is still the same.
When I did 4 though it had
ATA Channel 0
ATA Channel 1
ATA Channel 4
ATA Channel 5
4 port sata AHCI Controller

when there is no disk the device manager does not see the cd but when a cd/dvd is inserted it recognizes new hardware and is installed as a new category. It "acts like" it is a usb device like on windows XP when you could click on usb devices and you can disconnect a cd drive that is on the laptop.

This is interesting. Is the cd drive a external device?

So you took the internal cd drive out and let a friend borrow it?
Has it worked since friend brought it back?

I will explain. A friend needed a laptop after I installed the computer. He needed to use the dvd to play a movie but complained that the dvd does not exist even though I showed him that it works.
I did not take the device out since I installed 3 laptops all the same model and they all have the same "problem" so it I don't suspect the hardware unless its a faulty model. But then it would not work at all.

The optical drives don't need drivers any longer to work within the OS.
The issue seems more of a connectivity issue between the drive and the system.
Have you taken the drive out and using a can of compressed air blown out the connection slot to make sure there is no dust blocking it?
This worries me:

I installed 3 laptops all the same model and they all have the same "problem"

This would tell me the problem is a hardware issue and most likely as i described above.
Does the drive show up under My Computer?

When I hit the eject button it appears.
If closed with a disk inside then it exists everywhere
If closed without disk it will "vanish" again

If you mean as soon as windows finishes to load it does not exist.
I only get the two partitions I made on the hard drive.
