how to delete windows.old ?

hello i have just bought an acer aspire 5536 laptop and it had vista installed,i installed windows 7 ultimate but now i have got windows.old files and i cannot seem to delete them,does anyone know of an easy way to do this please?
i have been told to try disk cleanup but this does not work for me,i have also ran an ownership program and then tried to delete but stll no luck.
