Ealier today i was playing around with media center and went to:
Tasks
Settings
General
Windows media center setup
Join wireless Network

Then i used the Join Wireless Network Wizard

Then clicked yes when it asked if i wanted to join wireless network now

Clicked my Network name. dlink,

Then it asks for you network key, which i took a guess on, and supposivly it was right (didnt tell me it was wrong)

Then after you do this, it disconnects you from your network and you then have to manually reconnect. It then said successfully connected to the internet but now for some reason my wireless internet isnt working. Im doing this on my sisters laptop which is also wireless so its nothing with the network, its somthing on my computer.

When manually trying to reconnect it takes a while, it even puts "Connecting to the network is taking longer then usual". Then the next thing it shows is connection unsucessful. Im am terribly stumped, and google didnt seem to have anything that relates to media center and there Join Wireless Network.

I tried to diagnose the prblem but 2 of the 3 things dont work, and the 3rd says try to plug the computer using ethernet. Now my router is in the basement and its very far away, im on the 2nd story, so this isnt possible. Earlier today the internet was working just fine, but then i just had to play around and screwed this up. Thanks for the help

It could be a defective wireless adapter or wrong/corrupted drivers.

Its not that im to far away as it was working this moring, before i did that thing i mentioned above threw media center. I also reinstalled all the drivers and it still didnt work. Considering my comp is fairly new, about 2 weeks old, i dont have anything important on there yet. I am thinking i may restore to factory settings. Any ideas?

I doubt it's a driver issue or to far away if it was workiing this morning.

Why did you change it?

It is possible that you entered the wrong password info? It will not tell you it's wrong. It will just not connect to the network

What kind of wireless router are you using (make/model) and what kind of wireless adapter are you using?

Linksys has a program that you install on the computer connected directly to the modem/router that allows you to setup other computers to be apart of the wireless network.

It generates files you need on the wireless computer(s) to communicate with the router.

When ever I'm having trouble connecting, re-installing these setup files will usually do the trick.

Well, currently im doing a full system restore. I have a westell router and dlink wireless router. I was playing with the media center thing becuase my sister said the guy that came in and set up our network (idk why my dad hired him, not that hard) hooked media center tv up for here wirlessly. I thought this is how he did it so i gave it a go, but i was incredibly wrong. As for the WEP password not telling you if its incorrect, when i tried password for password it said "incorrect" but when i tried admin, it did say anything so i figure its correct. I really hope the system restore work. It would be a shame to do this and not have it work and have to redownload all my games.

OK the system restore didnt work, so it was definatly wasnt a driver issue, and now i know media center didnt change anything. Back when i got my comp i just plugged it in and it worked, but this time it wont do that. I hate how my dad had someone come in and make our network a secure network. I asked him for the pass and hes like "Oh i dont know, i didnt set it up". Looks like im screwed!

i tried adding my own work group, used a usb drive to transfer the info for the network, then when i finished, it gave me a network key. Saved the txt file to my usb, then when i went to my comp, and when it asked for it, i entered the random network key and it still said it was wrong. Is there anyway i can find the WEP key for my DLINK network. Thats what its asking for.

First, you wireless password is not "admin". Not if your using wep. That sounds more like the password used to access the router.

Dlink has a nice "emulator" on how to configure your router.

http://www.support.d...10/wireless.htm If you select wep for security, it will display your key.

or
http://www.techduke....d-link-wep-key/

Just go to your router and look at the wireless security settings and see what it is set to. If you don't know, then you can change it. Normally a wep key is hex password. You can use ascii to hex converter to take a normal phrase and convert it. http://it.toolbox.co...a-wep-key-13024
