Ubuntu install on Win 7

Can it be installed on top of windows 7 to run within it or does it need a partition? I initially thought the latter but ran the installer and it seems to want to install on top of windows.

You can install Ubuntu either on its own partition and dual boot or use the "wubi" installer for windows. The wubi installer allows you to run Ubuntu from windows like any other application including being able to uninstall using the windows control panel.
