Dim light when boot up

When i boot up my Sony Vaio VGN-NR360E and I don't have the power plugged in the screen get all dark. I can just barley see login screen. It gets dark after the four little bubbles that make up windows logo in Windows 7. I have to look through all the power option and I don't see anything to fix this little problem.

Laptop so try hooking a external monitor to it and see if the problem happens then. If it works correctly you may have a backlight problem or the lcd is going out.
