I have an Asus G50V notebook with windows vista and 7 dual booted... It's been working fine until after one of windows automatic updates completed and restarted the notebook. Ever since it does the intel "replubic of gamers" screen then it goes to a black screen with a blinking cursor. Only other screen I can access is F2 Bios screen, F8 doesn't do anything, nor any of the other function buttons. I tried a windows recovery cd but that loads until it goes to a blue screen saying a problem has been detected an windows has been shut down to prevent damage. I read other threads with the same problem but couldn't find a solution. Please, please, pleaseeeeeee help! Thanks

Malware crashed systems during Windows security updates
February 18, 2010 1:50 PM PST - by Elinor Mill
http://news.cnet.com...456162-245.html

Windows systems that crashed during the latest Microsoft security update last week did so because they were infected with a rootkit program that made changes to the operating system kernel, Microsoft said late on Wednesday.

"The restarts are the result of modifications the Alureon rootkit makes to Windows Kernel binaries, which places these systems in an unstable state," Mike Reavey, director of the Microsoft Security Response Center, wrote in a blog post. "In every investigated incident, we have not found quality issues with security update MS10-015."

The patch addresses a vulnerability in the 32-bit Windows kernel that could allow elevation of privilege that was disclosed last month.

The Win32/Alureon family of malware can modify DNS settings, hijack searches, and fraudulently click on ads, Microsoft said in a post on its Malware Protection Center Blog. Last year, versions appeared that infect the miniport driver associated with the hard disk of the operating system, the post says.

Microsoft will not offer the patch through Automatic Update for 32-bit Windows systems until a solution is available, but 64-bit versions will be offered.

Anyone believed to have been affected by the Alureon rootkit can visit https://consumersecu...t.microsoft.com. Those in the United States can contact Customer Service and Support at no charge using the PC Safety hotline at 1-866-727-2338 (PCSAFETY). Those outside the United States can find local contact numbers at http://support.micro...m/international.

Customers who choose not to install the update can implement the workaround or install the update manually as outlined in the MS10-015 bulletin.

"A malware compromise of this type is serious, and if customers cannot confirm removal of the Alureon rootkit using their chosen anti-virus/anti-malware software, the most secure recommendation is for the owner of the system to back up important files and completely restore the system from a cleanly formatted disk," Microsoft said.

The only problem is when I put it my recovery cd it loads for a while then jumps to an error screen where is says windows is shutting down, it happens everytime... Maybe I can try a different recovery cd? The one I got I downloaded from a different thread on this forum... And I'm at work right now, but I'm quite sure it doesn't beep at all. I will double check when I get home...

Download Windows Recovery Console HERE
Download, and install free Imgburn
Using Imgburn, burn rc.iso to a CD.
Boot to the CD...let it finish loading.
When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to start the Recovery Console.
Then, follow the steps from Repair Windows XP,:

If you can hear any beep codes, please post them here. Those beeps can tell whats wrong on your computer. One beep is regular boot up but if it does anything different, you have problem on your motherboard for sure.

There's no beeps when the computer starts up, and the windows recovery cd keeps going to a blue error screen which says

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen restarted your computer.

It says a whole lot of other things too about checking the disk space, but i have a 300 gig HD... Then it says check the hardware vendor for bios updates...

Any other suggestions??

If you have another computer, you can try your hardisk on it. One thing can be that the hardisk is broken and it wont start up. But im very sure that you have problem on motherboard.

Did you change the boot sequence in the bios to make the cdrom the first boot device.?
I'm not sure which key gets you there with your notebook but this is the general instructions for doing this.

To change Boot Sequence in your BIOS
Reboot the system and at the first post screen (where it is counting up memory) start tapping the DEL button
This will enter you into the Bios\Cmos area.
Find the Advanced area and click Enter
Look for Boot Sequence or Boot Options and highlight that click Enter
Now highlight the first drive and follow the directions on the bottom of the screen on how to modify it and change it to CDrom.
Change the second drive to the C or Main Drive
Once that is done then click F10 to Save and Exit
You will prompted to enter Y to verify Save and Exit. Click Y and the system will now reboot with the new settings.

Yea the cd-rom is first... That's not the problem, it boots to the cd but I don't think it reads the hard drive for some reason cause it loads the cd and then I see all the things that it's checking for at the bottom flash by, then all of
a sudden it jumps to the blue error screen....

I believe so... I know when I goto the smart flash thing in bios the hard drive shows and it still has all my files... That's the only way I know how to check it...

Is there a stop code with the BSOD and some information as to what is causing the problem under that?
As far as the recovery cd are you talking about the recovery cd that came with the system or a Recovery Console cd?
